MEN’S SOCCER EDGES SAINT ROSE, 2-1

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior forward Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) recorded three points to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring in the 19th minute. After carrying the ball up the middle of the field and into the penalty box, Faryar dropped a short pass off to his right to second-year graduate student forward Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt), who fired a shot into the left side of the net from 16 yards out at the 18:37 mark for his ninth goal of the season.

Saint Rose took the final three shots of the half, including two on goal, but could not find the back of the net.

After two shots by each team over the opening 15 minutes of the second half, the Dolphins doubled their lead. Junior midfielder Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain/Real Oviedo) carried the ball to the endline on the left side before serving a cross in front of the net. Faryar raced into the goal box and headed the ball into the net from near the right post at the 60:37 mark for his team-best 11th goal of the season. Faryar, who scored 14 goals two years ago, is the fifth player in the program's history to have multiple 11-goal seasons. The goal gives Faryar 32 goals and 71 points in his 49-game career. He took over sole possession of eighth place on the program's all-time goals scored chart and remains in ninth place on the program's career points list.

Just over five and one-half minutes later, the Golden Knights cut their deficit back to one. Off a corner kick from the right side by Niv Fogel, Oskar Aastroem was able to fire a shot into the back of the net from 12 yards out on the left side of the penalty box at the 66:08 mark.

Aastroem put another shot on goal less than four minutes later, but it was saved. Paulo Sdoia had one final chance for the Golden Knights, but his free kick from 28 yards was easily snared by the goalkeeper.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered four saves en route to earning his seventh win of the season between the pipes. Gianni Carillo took the loss after stopping three of the five shots on goal. Saint Rose recorded a 12-10 edge in shots, including 8-7 in the second half, while the Dolphins took five of the game's seven corner kicks.

Le Moyne (8-2, 5-2 NE10), which defeated the Golden Knights at home for the ninth straight time, returns to the field on Saturday at Stonehill College at 11:00 a.m.
