Easton, Mass. – Second-year graduate student back
Niklas Breunung (Fulda, Germany/Freiherr-vom-Stein Schule Fulda/Fulda University of Applied Sciences) headed in a corner kick with 3:30 left to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Stonehill College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Skyhawk Field.
After the Dolphins took six of the first eight shots in the game, including two that needed to be saved, the Skyhawks took advantage of a Le Moyne handball on the left side of the penalty box to score the game's first goal. Keegan Nutt stepped up and knocked the penalty kick off the right post and into the net at the 37:33 mark for his second goal of the season.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece in the final minute of the half. Off a short pass by junior forward
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) at the top of the penalty box, second-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) ripped a left-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net from 15 yards out at the 44:16 mark for his 10th tally of the season.
After the first shot of the second half was saved by Stonehill, the Skyhawks regained the lead in the 52nd minute. Off a shot by Ian Pereira that was blocked by a Le Moyne defender, Ryan Chieffo got to the loose ball between two defenders and fired a shot inside the left post from 13 yards out at the 51:54 mark for his first tally of the season.
The Dolphins took advantage of a Stonehill foul along the right edge of the penalty box to get a penalty kick. Weber sent the kick into the back of the net at the 69:12 mark for his team high-tying 11th goal of the campaign. Weber's 29 goals over the last two seasons are the second-most by a Dolphin in a two-year span, trailing only Gold Wave Hall of Fame member and assistant coach Francesco Riverso's 30 between 2000 and 2001.
After the Dolphins put two shots on goal over the next 15 minutes, Le Moyne tallied the game-winner in the 87th minute. Off a corner kick from the right side by senior midfielder
Sam Daniel (Bonnyrigg, Scotland/Lasswade/University of Mobile), Breunung was able to head the ball into the right side of the net from seven yards out at the 86:30 mark for his first goal of the season.
Nutt was able to get a shot off with 30 seconds remaining, but it was blocked by a Le Moyne defender.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded one save in the victory. Billy Troast tallied five saves in the loss for the Skyhawks. Le Moyne posted a 14-9 advantage in shots, including 7-5 in the second half, while taking three of the game's five corner kicks.
