Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior attackman
Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) tied the program's single-game record with 11 points to lead the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 15-7 victory over previously-unbeaten Assumption College on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
Kesselring tied the program record of 11 points, which was originally set by Rob Didio '86 against Rochester during the 1985 season, with six goals and five assists. Kesselring is the fifth player in Division II this season to record at least 11 points in a game.
The Dolphins opened the game's scoring at the 11:58 mark as freshman attackman
Devin Andrews (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy/Stony Brook) scored from the crease off a pass from Kesselring. The duo connected again 2:06 later. Sophomore midfielder
Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) pushed the lead to 3-0 with 8:12 left in the first quarter with his eighth goal of the year off a pass from Andrews.
Brett Jennings got the Greyhounds within two with his 10th goal of the year with 1:50 to go in the quarter.
Sophomore attackman
Jake Lewis (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/Cleveland State) started the second quarter's scoring just 36 seconds in off a feed from Kesselring.
Assumption answered with back-to-back goals to cut its deficit to 4-3. Travis Reid, the reigning NE10 Player of the Week, netted his 11th goal of the campaign with 13:29 left. Dan Farrell followed at the 11:10 mark off a feed from Dan Matisoff.
Le Moyne tallied the final four goals of the half to take an 8-3 lead into halftime. Junior midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) started the streak with 6:57 left off a feed from Hutchings. Kesselring netted his first goal of the contest with 4:08 remaining after collecting a feed from Lewis. He scored again with 37 seconds left off a feed from Andrews. After senior long-stick midfielder
Justin Hussey (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Onondaga C.C.) intercepted a pass with five seconds left and raced up field, he fed Kesselring in the left alley, where he fired in a shot with 1.8 seconds left for an 8-3 advantage.
As happened in the second quarter, Lewis got the scoring started in the third quarter by finishing off a pass from Kesselring, this time in an extra-man situation with 12:36 to go.
Mirroring the second quarter again, the Greyhounds responded with consecutive goals. Jennings tallied his 11th goal of the year with 10:41 remaining and then fed Farrell at the 7:06 mark for his 11th goal.
Kesselring found the back of the net for the fourth time in the game with 6:01 left after receiving a pass from Andrews. Just 34 seconds later, sophomore midfielder
Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena) netted his fifth goal of the season off a pass from Kesselring for an 11-5 lead.
Kesselring pushed the margin to 12-5 with his fifth goal of the day with 13:23 left in the fourth quarter after collecting a pass from Entenmann, who then fed Andrews 68 seconds later for his third goal of the day.
Kesselring tied Didio's single-game record by finishing off a pass from Andrews with 9:27 left in the game for his conference-leading 23rd goal of the campaign.
Freshman midfielder
Kaiden Tubbert (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Bridgton Academy) registered his first career goal with 7:37 to play after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder
Hans Zimmer (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa).
Travis Reid scored his 12th goal of the year 21 seconds later and Owen Peterson III completed the game's scoring with 1:01 left off a feed from Farrell.
Junior goalkeeper
Kyle Lumpe (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) recorded a career-high seven saves (against six goals), including four in the first quarter, over 54:43 between the pipes to earn the win in his first career start. Colby Hamwey, who entered the game as the nation's leader in goals against average (4.06) and save percentage (.689), made six saves (against 15 goals allowed) to suffer his first loss of the season.
Le Moyne (7-0, 3-0 NE10), which is now the only undefeated team in Division II, is back in action on Saturday at Saint Anselm College at 10:30 a.m.
