TOP-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE RALLIES TO FORCE OVERTIME, BUT FALLS IN NE10 SEMIFINALS, 9-8, TO 17TH-RANKED SAINT ANSELM

Syracuse, N.Y. – Patrick Sweeney scored the game-winning goal with 47.1 seconds remaining in overtime to give 17th-ranked and fifth-seeded Saint Anselm College a 9-8 upset of the top-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Ted Grant Field.

Le Moyne (15-1) now awaits word on a berth in the NCAA Championships. The eight-team field will be announced on NCAA.com on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. In this week's NCAA North Region rankings, the Dolphins were ranked first.

The teams almost made it through the first quarter without a goal being scored, but freshman attackman Devin Andrews (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy/Stony Brook) tallied his 24th goal of the season with three seconds left after taking a pass from sophomore attackman Jake Lewis (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/Cleveland State).

The Dolphins pushed their lead to 2-0 with 6:25 remaining in the second quarter as sophomore midfielder Hans Zimmer (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) netted his 10th goal of the year.

Saint Anselm, which defeated the Dolphins for the first time in 25 all-time meetings, answered with the final three goals of the quarter to take a 3-2 lead into halftime. Attackman Matt Ward tallied his 31st goal of the year with 5:20 left off a feed from Sean Tomaszewski. Just 19 seconds later, Sweeney evened the score at two apiece with his 34th goal of the season. Out of a timeout with 2:22 left in the half, midfielder Anthony Busconi registered his 35th goal of the season with 1:49 to go for a 3-2 lead.

The Hawks, who earned their first NE10 semifinals victory, recorded the first four goals of the third quarter to extend their run to seven straight goals and take a 7-2 lead. The 7-0 run came over a span of 13:22. Attackman Ryan Hesseltine started the half's scoring at the 12:47 mark with his 25th goal of the year off a feed from Busconi, who then scored his 36th goal 70 seconds later. Following a save by Nick Richard, the Hawks cleared the ball and pushed their lead to 6-2 with 8:08 remaining in the third as midfielder Griffin Shoemaker found the back of the net off a pass from midfielder Xavier Quinn. Busconi capped the streak with his third goal of the day with 6:58 left.

Le Moyne, which drops to 17-5 in the NE10 semifinals and falls to a team other than Merrimack (1999, 2011, 2014) for the first time since Bentley in 1998, snapped its scoring drought of 15:39 with 5:46 left in the quarter as senior attackman Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport), the NE10 Player of the Year, netted his 40th goal of the season. Just 94 seconds later, senior attackman Greg White (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School) scored his 18th goal from the left alley after taking a pass from sophomore midfielder Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena), which marked his first assist of the season.

After killing a penalty on the ensuing faceoff, the Hawks pushed their lead back to 8-4 with 1:13 left in the third as Hesseltine tallied his 26th goal of the season.

The Dolphins scored the fourth quarter's only goals to force overtime. Filtch started the comeback with his 19th of the year with 10:17 to play. After Saint Anselm called timeout with 6:50 left, Kesselring cut Le Moyne's deficit to 8-6 with his career-high 41st goal of the campaign with 5:56 to go. After White had a shot hit the crossbar with 5:03 left, Filtch picked up the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net to get the Dolphins within 8-7.

The Dolphins won the ensuing faceoff and got off four shots, but the first three were wide and the fourth was saved by Richard with 3:21 remaining. The Dolphins forced a 30-second timer on the Hawks before Busconi put a shot on net, which was saved by redshirt junior goalkeeper Jack Sweeney (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) with 1:50 to play and picked up by senior long-stick midfielder Justin Hussey (Rome, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Onondaga C.C.).

The Dolphins cleared the ball and called timeout with 1:37 to play. Off a restart from behind the net after a shot was sent right of the cage with 29 seconds left, Andrews fed Kesselring with 21 seconds left for his 42nd goal of the year.

Le Moyne won the ensuing faceoff, but was unable to get a shot off before regulation time expired.

The Dolphins won the opening faceoff of overtime and fired a shot on goal with 3:06 to go, but it was saved by Richard and picked up by defenseman Chris Tully. The Hawks cleared the ball and called timeout with 2:43 left. Quinn fired a shot with 2:14 remaining, but it was right of the goal. The Hawks were then issued a 30-second clock warning with 1:01 to play. A Le Moyne defender knocked the ball to the ground seven seconds later, but Patrick Sweeney was able to pick it up and bounce a shot past Jack Sweeney with 47.1 seconds left for the game-winning goal.

Jack Sweeney made eight saves, including four in the fourth quarter, over 61:57 between the pipes in suffering his first loss of the season. Richard tallied 10 saves, including three in the first quarter and four in the second quarter, over 63:13 to earn the victory.
