Worcester, Mass. – Dylan Rodrigues had a goal and two assists to lead Assumption College to a 3-1 win over the 22nd-ranked Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Multi-Sport Stadium.
Following an 8-2 advantage in shots by the Dolphins over the opening 40 minutes, including a 4-0 edge in shots on goal, the Greyhounds opened the game's scoring with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. After taking a pass from Jeremy Martin out of the left corner, Alex Moschella served the ball from the left sideline into the penalty box, where Rodrigues was able to head the ball from 10 yards out inside the near left post at the 43:18 mark for his first goal of the season.
The Dolphins, who lost to Assumption for the first time since 2008 and for just the third time in 20 meetings under the direction of 19-year head coach
Tom Bonus, evened the score at one apiece on the first shot of the second half. After receiving a pass in the middle of the field, second-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) played the ball to the left sideline to junior midfielder
Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain/Real Oviedo), who floated a shot off the goalkeeper's hand and into the upper right corner of the net from 23 yards out at the 52:53 mark for his second goal of the campaign.
Following four shots by the Dolphins in a span of five minutes, including a pair on goal, the Greyhounds regained the lead in the 69th minute. Off a corner kick from the left corner by Rodrigues, Kevin Hernandez fired the ball from the right side of the penalty box into the center of the goal box, where it was redirected into the net from three yards out by Andres Amador at the 68:20 mark for his first tally of the year.
After four shots in a span of three minutes by the Greyhounds, including two on target, Assumption used a counterattack to net the game's final goal. Off a header by Hernandez on a Le Moyne throw-in, Rodrigues played the ball into space on the left side. Jason Lages collected the ball and went in one-on-one with goalkeeper before slipping a shot inside the left post from 12 yards out at the 78:11 mark for his third marker of the season.
Le Moyne had six shots, including two on goal and one off the crossbar, in the final 10 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two saves in the second half in the loss. Sebastian Jimenez tallied eight saves, including four in each half, to earn the win between the pipes. Le Moyne registered a 19-10 advantage in shots, including 11-6 after halftime, while posting a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (6-2, 3-2 NE10), which earned a top-25 ranking earlier in the day, returns home to face Merrimack College, which is receiving votes, on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. The Dolphins are winless in their last five games as a ranked team (0-3-2).
