Ithaca, N.Y. – Freshman back
Vittoria Fuduli (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) drilled home a free kick in the 48th minute to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Division I Cornell University on Wednesday night at Berman Field.
The victory is Le Moyne's first over the Big Red in four all-time meetings (1983, 1984, 1985), while the goal is also the first against Cornell. Additionally, the victory is Le Moyne's first over a Division I opponent since a 2-1 overtime win over Niagara in 1992.
In the scoreless first half, Cornell registered an 8-2 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Dolphins scored the game's only goal at the 47:42 mark following a foul on the Big Red. From the top left corner of the penalty box, Fuduli fired the free kick inside the near left post for her first collegiate tally.
With just over 25 minutes remaining, the Big Red had three shots from inside the goal box, but were unable to convert the tying goal. The first shot hit the post, two seconds later a defender saved the ball at the goal line and another shot two more seconds later was blocked by a defender out of bounds for a corner kick. A header off the ensuing corner kick was sent high over the crossbar.
Cornell put two shots on goal in the 84th minute, but both were saved.
Senior goalkeeper
Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida) finished the contest with seven saves, including the four in the first half, to record her second straight shutout. The shutout gives her nine for her Le Moyne career, which is tied for the second-most in the program's history. Chrissy Mayer tallied just one save in the loss for the Big Red. Cornell finished the contest with an 18-6 advantage in shots, while posting a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (2-0) opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday at Southern New Hampshire University at 7:00 p.m.
