MEN’S BASKETBALL USES FIRST-HALF THREE-POINT BARRAGE TO DOWN SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 77-68

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) scored 19 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 77-68 wire-to-wire win over Southern New Hampshire University in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening at Ted Grant Court.

Asuncion-Byrd tallied 10 of his team-high point total in the second half, while grabbing four rebounds. Sophomore guard Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.), who entered the game with five three-pointers on the season, drained five in the contest en route to 15 points. Junior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, while dishing out a game-high seven assists.

Daquaise Andrews led all scorers in the contest with 21 points, including 17 after halftime, while adding six rebounds and four assists. Remo Simankevicius tallied 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. Charlie Russo and Shawn Montague each posted 10 points for the Penmen, while Montague grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Following a three-point play by the Penmen to make the score 4-3 just under two minutes into the game, the Dolphins exploded for 21 of the next 23 points over 6:15. Asuncion-Byrd led the run with seven points, while Brown hit two three-pointers. Junior guards Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) and Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) also drained three-pointers in the span as the Dolphins connected all five attempts from long-range in the stretch.

Montague scored four points over two possessions to get the Penmen within 16, but Leavell buried back-to-back three-pointers around a free thrown by Justyn Lacy to give the Dolphins their first 21-point lead of the game, 31-10, with 6:43 left in the half.

The teams traded points over the final 6:14 of the stanza as Le Moyne's lead bounced between 17 and 20 points before settling at 19 as Brown made a lay-up with 53 seconds left for a 43-24 advantage at the break.

After the Dolphins scored the first four points of the second half to take their largest lead of the game, the Penmen scored nine of the next 11 points to trim their deficit to 16 with 15:40 left. Five different Penmen accounted for the nine points.

Following 10 points from each team over the next five and one-half minutes, the Dolphins used a 7-1 spurt to take a 66-44 lead with 8:09 to play. Leavell made a three-pointer before Asuncion-Byrd scored the next four points, including a thunderous dunk over Simankevicius.

The Penmen countered with 13 of the next 17 points to get back within 13 with 4:06 left. Russo started the streak with a left-corner three-pointer, while Andrews scored the final four.

Le Moyne pushed its advantage back to 16 with five of the next seven points. Jennings hit a three-pointer and Roland followed with two free throws.

Southern New Hampshire closed out the game with nine of the last 11 points over the final 1:49.

Le Moyne (8-6, 5-4 NE10), which moved into a tie for first place in the NE10 Southwest Division, returns to the hardwood on Saturday at Merrimack College at 3:00 p.m.
