North Andover, Mass. – Ryan Boulter scored 24 points to lead Merrimack College to a 76-62 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Bert Hammel Court.
Junior forward
Kobi Nwandu (York, Pa./Northeastern York/East Stroudsburg), who made his return to the lineup following a three-game absence, led the Dolphins offensively with 17 points, including nine in the first half. Senior guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) tallied 15 points, nine of which came in the first half, and grabbed four rebounds. Junior forward
Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds.
Boulter, who drained six three-pointer in the game, scored 14 of his points in the first half. Juvaris Hayes tallied 12 of his 14 points in the second half, while adding eight assists, seven steals and five rebounds. Idris Joyner and Jaleel Lord each recorded 13 points, while Joyner grabbed five rebounds.
Following a lay-up by Brown to give the Dolphins a 4-3 lead, the Warriors scored 11 of the next 13 points to take the lead. Boulter scored all 11 points on a trio of three-pointers and a jump shot.
Le Moyne answered with a 12-2 run to take the lead back. Nwandu and Asuncion-Byrd made lay-ups, redshirt junior guard
Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) drilled a three-pointer and Nwandu hit a jumper and then drilled a three-pointer for an 18-16 lead with 8:12 left in the half.
Merrimack scored the next five points to take the lead, but Asuncion-Byrd connected on a three-pointer to even the score at 21 apiece with 5:58 left.
The Warriors followed with six straight points and 11 of the next 14 for a 32-24 lead with 3:40 to go. Boulter started the run with a three-pointer and Joyner followed with a conventional three-point play. Joyner followed with another lay-up and Troy McLaughlin capped the streak with a three-pointer.
The Dolphins scored six of the last eight points of the half to get within 34-30 at halftime. Nwandu made a lay-up before Asuncion-Byrd followed with a pair of lay-ups.
Merrimack started the second half with the first four points before the teams traded points, which resulted in the Warriors leading 43-34 with 16:00 left.
Le Moyne then rattled off 14 consecutive points over four minutes to take a five-point lead. Brown and sophomore guard
Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) started the streak with baskets in the paint, junior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) followed with consecutive three-pointers for the lead and then Nwandu scored four points over two possessions to force a Merrimack timeout.
The Warriors responded out of the timeout with eight straight points to take the lead at 24 of the next 33 to open up a double-digit lead for the first time. Lord hit a three-pointer and then Hayes scored five straight points to take the lead for good.
After Leavell hit a three-pointer to make it 54-53 with 9:32 to play, the Warriors took control with 13 of the next 17 points for a 67-57 lead with 5:06 left. Boulter scored seven of the points, including the final three, while Hayes added four.
The Dolphins trimmed their deficit to six with the next four points, but the Warriors closed out the game with nine of the least 10 points. Khalief scored four of the points, while Lord started the run with a lay-up and Boulter hit a three-pointer.
Le Moyne (8-7, 5-5 NE10) returns home to face Stonehill College on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
