VOLLEYBALL RECORDS FIRST-EVER WIN OVER NEW HAVEN, 3-2, DOWNS MERCY, 3-1

West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore outside hitter Mary Talty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered 17 kills in each match to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to wins over the University of New Haven and Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. The Dolphins recorded their first-ever victory over New Haven, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference action and then defeated non-conference foe Mercy, 3-1.
 
Not only was today the first victory over the Chargers in 18 all-time meetings, but it was also the first match the Dolphins won two sets. The cumulative set scores of the previous 17 matchups was 51-5.

The Chargers opened the match with a 25-13 victory in the first set, which included a pair of runs of at least five points. After the teams went back and forth in the second set, including nine ties, the Dolphins scored the last two points for a 25-23 win to even the match at one set apiece. Following a four-point run by the Chargers to take an 8-7 lead in the third set, the Dolphins scored five consecutive points en route to a 25-15 victory for a 2-1 lead in the contest. After falling behind 7-4 in the fourth set, New Haven rattled off 13 of the next 15 points and 21 of the last 26 for a 25-12 win to force the decisive fifth set. After New Haven held an 8-5 lead when the teams switched sides of the court, the Dolphins scored five of the next six points for a 10-9 lead. Following ties at 11, 12, 13 and 14, the Dolphins got back-to-back kills from senior middle blocker Jacquelyne Ghindia (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) to close out the set, 16-14, for the 3-2 victory.

Talty registered six kills in each of the second and third sets, while adding three blocks and two digs to her 17 total kills. Ghindia finished the match with 11 kills, including three in each of the fourth and fifth sets, while adding five digs. Junior setter Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) registered her fifth double-double of the season with 35 assists and a career-high 21 digs, including six in the second set, while tying her career-high with seven kills. Sophomore libero Emily Mosack (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) led the Dolphins defensively with a career-high 33 digs, including 11 in the first set and nine in the second. Senior defensive specialist Claire Hiwiller (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) tallied 14 digs and sophomore outside hitter Kendyl Gorick (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor) recorded a career-high 11.

Camille Garden led three Chargers with double-digit kills with 11 on a .400 hitting percentage, while adding five blocks and five digs. Mallory Nowicki also recorded 11 kills to go along with eight digs and two blocks. Emily Barry posted 10 kills and six assisted blocks. Angela Chan dished out 26 assists and recorded 10 digs, while Sammie Pagula had 13 assists, eight digs and three service aces. Julia Guarniere led the Chargers defensively with 27 digs, while adding six assists and three service aces. Ruby Fera posted 13 digs and nine kills, while Kali Greathead turned in 11 digs and seven kills.

Mercy opened the match with a 25-23 victory after scoring three of the last four points. The Dolphins overcame a 15-11 deficit in the second set to record a 27-25 win in the second set. Le Moyne jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set en route to a 25-21 victory for a 2-1 lead in the match. The Dolphins scored seven of the last 10 points in the fourth set for a 25-22 win to close out the match.

Talty recorded five kills in each of the first two sets before landing in the third, while posting five digs and a career-high four blocks, including a career-best three solo, in the match. Gorick tallied her first career double-double with a career-high 11 kills, including four in the second set, and a career best-tying 11 digs. Yancone registered her fourth consecutive double-double with 41 assists and 19 digs, while adding six kills. Mosack posted 17 digs, Hiwiller had 13 and sophomore defensive specialist Meagan Murphy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) totaled 11 as five Dolphins finished with double-figure dig totals.

Imani DeBose led all players in the match with 20 kills, including six in the first set and five in each of the third and fourth sets. NeKendra Liddle hit .409 en route to 12 kills, including four in each of the second and third sets. Natalia Garcia recorded a double-double of 41 assists and 18 digs, while adding eight kills. Adriana Lopez-Soto led the team defensively with 20 digs to go along with nine assists. Selma Vulic was the third Maverick with double-figure digs with 14.

Le Moyne (10-6, 3-1 NE10) returns to action next Saturday at Pace University at 1:00 p.m.
