MEN’S SOCCER DOWNS NEW HAVEN IN DOUBLE OVERTIME, 3-2

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Pablo Fernandez (Aviles, Spain/Real Oviedo) scored midway through the second overtime period to give the Le Moyne College men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field on Saturday afternoon.

Heading into the final day of the regular season on Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State University at 2:00 p.m., the Dolphins can finish between third and sixth in the NE10 standings. A win over the Owls will guarantee the third seed. A loss or tie will result in the third, fourth, fifth or sixth seeded depending on the results for Assumption (at Saint Anselm), Saint Rose (at Adelphi) and Southern New Hampshire (at Stonehill). The Dolphins own the head-to-head tiebreaker over Assumption and Southern New Hampshire, but not against Saint Rose.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just one minute into the contest. After having his initial shot from 10 yards saved, redshirt freshman midfielder Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) jumped at the loose ball in front of the net and headed it in at the 1:01 mark for his third goal of the season.

As with Le Moyne's goal, the Chargers tallied their first goal off a rebound in the 12th minute. After having his initial shot from three yards out saved, Nate Peduzzi knocked the loose ball just over the goal line at the 11:46 mark for his team-best fifth tally of the year.

The Dolphins were able to put a shot on target in the 25th minute, but it was saved.

The teams were scoreless over the first 43:58 of the second half as Le Moyne had five shots saved and New Haven had a pair of shots saved.

Le Moyne took its second lead of the game with just over one minute to go. Sophomore forward Brandon Mimas (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UAlbany) collected the ball on a breakaway along with left sideline and carried it up field. Before reaching the penalty box, he slid a pass to the middle of the field to sophomore midfielder Noah Moothedan (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner), who was able to wrap a shot around the goalkeeper and into the left side of the net from 18 yards out at the 88:59 mark for his sixth goal of the campaign.

New Haven knotted the game again just 27 seconds later. From the right side of the penalty box, Alessandro Pappalardo sent a pass through the box to Jon Calvo, who scored from five yards out on the left side of the goal box at the 89:26 mark for his second goal of the season.

Neither team was able to register a shot in the first overtime period.

The Dolphins had the first scoring opportunity of the second overtime period, but had their free kick from the left side punched away.

Le Moyne took advantage of a misplay by New Haven to score the winning goal. On a ball headed towards the left edge of the penalty box, the goalkeeper beat Mimas to the ball, but kicked it off one of his defenders and it ricocheted towards the endline. Mimas got to the ball and sent a pass to the middle of the penalty box. Fernandez ran onto the ball before firing a shot from 12 yards out into the right side of the net at the 105:20 mark for his second goal of the campaign.

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered three saves to earn his conference-best 11th victory of the season between the pipes. Stefano Lorusso tallied eight saves in the loss. The Dolphins posted a 14-12 edge in shots, while New Haven recorded a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
