Syracuse, N.Y. – Le Moyne College head baseball coach
Scott Cassidy '98 announced on Wednesday afternoon that five student-athletes have signed Letters of Intent to attend Le Moyne and play for the Dolphins in 2021. The class consists of catcher
Brady Fureno, infielder/outfielder
Jason Boule, left-handed pitcher
Max Parker and right-handed pitchers
Keenen Smith and
Matt Tarby.
Brady Fureno – C – Canajoharie, N.Y./ Fort Plain
Fureno will follow his brother Drew's footsteps to the Heights and will also man the catcher position. Brady is a First Team All-State catcher, a three-time Western Athletic Conference First Team catcher and a three-time Amsterdam Recorder All-Area catcher. He has led his team to three Section 2 Championships, a NY State runner-up finish and a NY State Championship. Since 2016, Fureno has a HS career batting average of .432 and has been a great defensive catcher as well.
Cassidy on Fureno: "We are extremely excited to bring Brady into our program. Like his brother, Drew, he is a tough, gritty baseball player that will give you everything he has between the lines and in the classroom. He is a very good hitting catcher to go along with his defensive skills and we look forward to him handling the pitching staff throughout his time here."
Jason Boule – INF/OF – Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Syracuse
Boule is an infielder who can also play the outfield and has been named All-League each of his three seasons on Varsity. He earned second team as a freshman and First team All-League the past two seasons, while hitting .446 his sophomore year and .485 his junior year.
Cassidy on Boule: "Jason is a very good athlete. He brings a tremendous bat to our lineup with a gap-to-gap approach with some power. He can run as well making him a real threat in the box and on the bases. Defensively, he can play anywhere in the infield as well as the outfield and possesses a very strong throwing arm. He is going to be an exciting player to watch develop during his time here at Le Moyne."
Max Parker – LHP – Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius
Parker is a left-handed pitcher who won four games last season while leading his team to a Sectional title. As a junior, he finished with an ERA of 1.13, while striking out 42 in 37 innings.
Cassidy on Parker: "I am very excited that Max will be joining our pitching staff. I have seen him develop the last few seasons and he is just getting started. He has a very good curveball to go with his fastball and shows good command of the strike zone. The sky is the limit for Max and I see him making an impact right away as a freshman."
Kennen Smith – RHP – Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington
Smith is a big right-handed pitcher who won three games last year as a junior with a 1.26 ERA. He struck out 40 and walked only 10 in 40 innings pitched. He garnered an MVP award this summer for his play in a well-attended travel tournament while playing for the prestigious Taconic Rangers organization.
Cassidy on Smith: "Kennen is a big, strong pitcher who will be a great addition to our staff. He will be a guy that pounds the strike zone and really has a chance to develop into a force on the mound. We are really looking forward to seeing what he can do at the college level."
Matt Tarby – RHP – Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes
Tarby is a right-handed pitcher who both hit and pitched at Bishop Grimes High School. Although he swung the bat well in high school to the tune of a .483 batting average, he will be concentrating on the mound in college. Tarby is a two-time team MVP and two-time All-League member in high school and has 62 career strikeouts to just 19 walks to date. Tarby was also a member of the Babe Ruth 16-18 year old All-Star team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the Babe Ruth World Series this past Summer.
Cassidy on Tarby: "Matt is going to be a good one. He has good command of his pitches and competes on the mound. I have seen his velocity climb steadily the past few years and he is only scratching the surface of what he is capable of doing. He is definitely going to be a guy to keep your eyes on the next few years."
The Dolphins, who return 22 letterwinners, including five starting position players and three starting pitchers, from last year's 24-25 squad which advanced to the semifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, open the 2020 season on Friday, February 14 against East Stroudsburg University at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
The National Letter-of-Intent program was started in 1964. Administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA), the program was designed with prospective student-athletes in mind. A signed letter-of-intent indicates a prospective student-athlete agrees to attend the designated college or university for one academic year. Institutions agree to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year to the student-athlete, provided the student-athlete is admitted to the institution and is eligible for financial aid under NCAA rules.
