Erie, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) recorded a career-best performance to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 100-87 victory over Alderson Broaddus University in the consolation game of the 36th Annual Gary Miller Classic on Saturday evening at Gannon University's Hammermill Center.
Hernandez, who was named to the Classic's All-Tournament Team, registered career-highs of 25 points, including 16 in the second half, and eight rebounds, including four in each half. Graduate student guard
Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) recorded his highest-scoring output as a Dolphin with 20 points, including 11 in the first half, to go along with seven rebounds (tied for his most as a Dolphin), six assists and three steals. Junior guard
Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) went 6-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range, en route to 17 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Redshirt senior guard
Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) scored eight of his 13 points in the second half, while senior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) scored seven of his 12 points after halftime. Senior forward
Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) registered his third straight double-double and fourth of the season with 12 points, including 10 in the second half, and 12 rebounds, including eight after the intermission.
Troy Cantrell led four Battlers in double digits with 24 points, including 14 in the first half, while grabbing 12 rebounds and flirting with a triple-double with eight assists. Colton Huestis hit five three-pointers en route to 18 points in 17 minutes off the bench, including 11 points in six minutes in the first half. David Shriver also drained five three-pointers for 15 points, while KJ Walker tallied 12 points and nine assists.
The Battlers opened the game with the first eight points in the initial 1:21 to force a Le Moyne timeout. Cantrell made a lay-up and a three-pointer and then Shriver drilled a three-pointer.
Le Moyne answered with 10 of the next 13 points to get back within one. Hernandez got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with a three-pointer, Garner followed with one of his own and then Leavell and Brown converted two-point shots.
Alderson Broaddus used a 12-5 run over 4:32 to take its largest lead of the game at 26-17 with 10:00 left in the half. Cantrell scored seven of the points, Walker made a three-pointer and the streak was capped with a jumper by Bruce Spruell, who played the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons at NE10-foe American International College.
Le Moyne answered with a 17-7 run over 3:58, including 7-0 over the last 30 seconds of the span, to take its first lead of the game. Gairey scored seven of the points, including the go-ahead free throw, while Hernandez had a pair of lay-ups and Leavell and Roland each made three-pointers.
Huestis scored five straight points to give the Battlers a four-point advantage before the teams alternated points the remainder of the half, which ended with Alderson Broaddus in front 45-43.
Le Moyne scored the first 11 points of the second half over 1:58 to take the lead for good. Brown made back-to-back lay-ups, Hernandez followed with consecutive lay-ups and Gairey capped the jaunt with a conventional three-point play for a 54-45 lead.
Huestis recorded a four-point play with 13:23 left to get the Battlers within seven (64-57), but the Dolphins countered with the next six points for their first 13-point advantage of the game.
After Hernandez made a lay-up with 7:59 left to give the Dolphins an 84-70 lead, Alderson Broaddus scored 11 of the next 16 points to get within eight. Shriver made a three-pointer and then Zach Simpkins made a jumper and a pair of three-pointers to make the score 89-81 with 4:24 remaining.
The Dolphins countered with 10 of the next 13 points to put the game away. Gairey started the run with a lay-up, Roland made four free throws around a lay-up by Brown, who ended the streak with two free throws for a 15-point lead with 35 seconds left.
Hernandez ended the game's scoring with a free throw with 23 seconds left to give the Dolphins 100 points for the second time this season (123 vs. Chestnut Hill on November 10). After going almost 14 years between scoring at least 100 points in a regular season game, the Dolphins have accomplished the feat twice in seven games.
Le Moyne (4-4) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at Adelphi University at 7:30 p.m.
