VOLLEYBALL UPSETS SAINT ANSELM, 3-0, IN PENULTIMATE HOME MATCH OF THE SEASON

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore outside hitter Mary Talty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) recorded 13 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

The Hawks used a trio of 3-1 runs to jump out to a 9-3 lead in the first set. The Dolphins slowly battled back to knot the score at 17 following a 4-0 spurt to force a Saint Anselm timeout. After the Dolphins used a 3-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, the Hawks answered with three consecutive points for a 23-21 advantage to force a Le Moyne timeout. The Dolphins landed a kill for the next point and took advantage of three errors by the Hawks to win the set, 25-23.

Saint Anselm jumped out to a 7-1 run to open the second set and force a Le Moyne timeout. After the Hawks took a 10-3 lead, the Dolphins scored six straight to get within one. Following a 4-1 spurt by Saint Anselm, Le Moyne tallied seven of the next eight points for a 17-15 edge. After Le Moyne took a 20-19 lead, the Hawks scored three straight points for a 22-20 lead to force a Le Moyne timeout. The Dolphins scored the next two points to tie the score and followed a Saint Anselm point with the last three points for another 25-23 win.

Roles were reversed to start the third set as the Dolphins took the early lead, 6-3 and 9-5. The Hawks answered back to knot the set at 11. Le Moyne took control of the set with the next three points and later used a 7-0 run for a 22-13 advantage. The teams split the next four points before Saint Anselm committed an attacking error to give the Dolphins the set, 25-15, to close out the match.

Talty hit .478 en route to her 13 kills, eight of which came in the second set without committing an error. Freshman outside hitter Madeleine Kennedy (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) recorded five of her nine kills in the third set, while adding three digs. Junior setter Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) dished out 29 assists to go along with five digs, four service aces and two kills. Senior libero Claire Hiwiller (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) led the Dolphins defensively with 12 digs, including seven in the second set, while adding four assists and three service aces.

Madison Sollows led the Hawks in the loss with 10 kills, including four in the third set. Michelle Henwood directed the offense with 35 assists and posted eight digs, while Caroline Belmontez led the defense with 13 digs, including eight in the second set.

Le Moyne (13-11, 6-6 NE10), which holds a half-game lead over Adelphi for the eighth spot in the NE10 standings and is a half-game behind Southern Connecticut State for seventh, concludes its non-conference schedule on Wednesday at Daemen College at 7:00 p.m.
