Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – Ryan Gibbons registered 19 saves and Bobby Chillianis recorded five points to lead 15th-ranked Mercy College to a 10-7 upset win over the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Mercy Field.
The Dolphins lost their season opener for the first time since the 1999 season, a 15-7 setback at now-defunct Dowling College on March 20. The three-goal loss is the largest against a non-conference opponent in the regular season since an 11-7 loss at then-C.W. Post (now LIU Post) on March 30, 2002.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first with two goals in the opening three minutes. Chillianis found the back of the net at the 12:55 mark with his fourth goal of the season. Just 45 seconds later, Ryan MacSpadyen finished off a pass from Tommy McPartland for his second tally of the year.
Le Moyne took advantage of two Mercy penalties to even the score at two apiece. Sophomore attackman
Devin Andrews (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy/Stony Brook) got the Dolphins on the scoreboard by knocking a loose ball into the net with 9:47 left after an initial shot was saved. Freshman midfielder
Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School) registered his first collegiate goal six seconds into an extra-man opportunity with 7:01 to go in the opening quarter.
Mercy, specifically Chillianis, answered with a pair of goals to take a 4-2 lead after 15 minutes of play. He put his team back in front with 4:43 to go after collecting a pass from MacSpadyen. Chillianis closed out the quarter by scoring his third goal of the day with eight seconds left.
The Mavericks pushed their margin to three for the first time with the first goal of the second quarter. Following a Le Moyne penalty, McPartland netted his first goal of the season off a feed from MacSpadyen.
The Dolphins scored the last two goals of the quarter to get within 5-4 at halftime. Junior midfielder
Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded his first goal of the season with 6:03 to go in the quarter off a pass from Sypek. Sophomore
Evan Kelly (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) got the Dolphins within one with 1:55 remaining after taking a feed from Sypek.
Le Moyne extended its run to 4-0 with the first two goals of the third quarter to take its only lead of the game. Senior midfielder
Josh Slowinski (Williamsville, N.Y./Clarence) tallied his first goal of the season just over three minutes into the second half to knot the score at five after taking a pass from senior midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn). Freshman attackman
Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) recorded an extra-man goal at the 8:40 mark to put the Dolphins in front after receiving a pass from classmate
John Howes (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee).
Mercy answered with three goals over four minutes to regain the lead.
Jack Gibbons evened the score for the final time with his second goal of the season with 7:26 to go in the quarter. MacSpadyen put the Mavericks in front for good with 5:33 left off a feed from Chillianis. Just prior to an extra-man opportunity expiring, McPartland gave Mercy an 8-6 lead with 3:27 remaining in the quarter after collecting a feed from
Jack Gibbons.
The Mavericks pushed their lead to 9-6 with 10:10 left in the game as McPartland finished off another pass from
Jack Gibbons in an extra-man situation.
Le Moyne answered with 6:41 remaining to get within 9-7, but were unable to score again. Kelly scored his second goal of the day after taking a pass from Hutchings.
Chillianis finished off the game's scoring with an empty-net goal in an extra-man opportunity with 39 seconds remaining.
Junior goalkeeper
Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) recorded five saves between the pipes in his Dolphin debut. Ryan Gibbons, the East Coast Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Year last year, recorded six of his saves in the first quarter and seven in the third quarter.
Le Moyne (0-1) returns to action on Saturday against third-ranked Seton Hill University at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Collegiate High School in Buffalo.
