Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior attackmen
Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) and
Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) each recorded four points to lead the seventh-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 18-11 win over The College of Saint Rose in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Hutchings scored the only goal of the first quarter just 1:51 into the contest.
The Dolphins, Larson specifically, scored the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead. With the Dolphins starting the quarter with the ball in an extra-man situation, Larson tallied his sixth goal of the season at the 14:24 mark after taking a pass from junior midfielder
Ross Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus/Siena). He then scored with 11:35 left after collecting a loose ball and depositing it into the net from the right crease.
Jordyn Marchiano got the Golden Knights on the scoreboard with 9:46 left with an underhand shot from the left side.
Le Moyne answered with four straight goals. Larson started the run with his eighth goal of the season with 9:33 remaining after taking a feed from senior midfielder
Dan Entenmann (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn). Just 10 seconds later, Hutchings scooped up the loose ball off the faceoff and fed freshman attackman
Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) for his fourth goal of the year. Hutchings then gave the Dolphins a 6-1 lead with an unassisted goal with 6:45 to go. Sheehan capped off the run with 3:54 left off a pass from Entenmann.
Saint Rose trimmed its deficit to 7-3 with back-to-back goals. Jack Kane scored with 2:49 left off a pass from John Loughlin, while Drew Carpino found the back of the net with 1:21 remaining in the half.
Sheehan capped the scoring in the half by picking up a loose ball on the right side of the crease and scoring on the left side with 1:04 to go.
Le Moyne blew the game open with a 7-1 run in the third quarter, including the first six goals. Senior midfielder
Josh Slowinski (Williamsville, N.Y./Clarence) started the run with a rocket from the right alley with 12:50 left. Larson got the Dolphins into double digits with 8:43 remaining. Just 38 seconds later, senior midfielder
James Felix (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) tallied his first goal of the season. Senior attackman
Ryan Cosgrove (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) made it 12-3 with an extra-man goal with 6:41 remaining off a pass from Hutchings. Freshman midfielder
Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School) netted his third goal of the campaign with 5:47 left, while Slowinski capped the run with 2:32 to go off a pass from Entenmann.
Off the ensuing faceoff, long-stick Jeremy Pariseau scored his first goal of the season for the Golden Knights.
Cosgrove finished off the scoring in the stanza with an extra-man goal off a pass from junior midfielder
Hans Zimmer (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) with 13 ticks left in the quarter.
Saint Rose tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter and seven of the first nine. Marchiano started the run with an unassisted goal with 13:49 remaining. Carter Badour followed with his seventh goal of the season 54 seconds later. Badour scored again 50 seconds later.
Freshman midfielder
John Bergan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) netted his first career goal with 11:05 left to put the Dolphins up 16-7.
Badour answered with his third goal of the quarter just 44 seconds later.
Sophomore midfielder
Ben McCreary (Cicero, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pushed Le Moyne's lead back to nine with his second goal of the year with 9:03 to play.
The Golden Knights tallied the next three goals to get within six. Marchiano recorded an extra-man goal with 7:56 left off a pass from Carpino. Badour followed with his 10th goal of the season with 5:52 remaining. He capped his team's scoring with his fifth goal of the quarter with 4:28 to go.
Sophomore midfielder
Kaiden Tubbert (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn/Bridgton Academy) finished off the game's scoring with his second goal of the year with 1:34 remaining after taking a pass from classmate
Jon Pfohl (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna/Stony Brook).
Junior goalkeeper
Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) made five saves (against four goals) in 42:38 between the pipes to earn his third win of the season. Matthew Gill turned away 12 shots (against 16 goals) in 49:39 of action.
Le Moyne (3-1, 1-0 NE10), which won its NE10 opener for the 12th straight year, returns to action next Saturday against American International College at 12:00 p.m.
