Syracuse, N.Y. – Grace Stranahan scored a goal and dished out an assist to lead Daemen College to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over the Le Moyne College women's soccer team in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
In the scoreless first half, Daemen registered a 4-3 advantage in shots, while putting the only shot on goal and taking the only two corner kicks.
Just over four minutes into the second half, Le Moyne struck for the first goal of the game. After stealing the ball along the right sideline, junior midfielder
Elizabeth Glynn (Pittsford, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) carried the ball towards the endline before sending a cross in front of the net. The pass carried towards the far left post, where junior forward
Elizabeth Maguire (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was able to knock the ball into the net at the mouth of the goal at the 49:14 mark.
The Wildcats evened the score at one apiece just over two minutes later. From the defensive side of the midfield stripe, Stranahan sent a pass down the left side of the field. Jamie Boyar ran onto the ball just outside of the penalty box, eluded the goalkeeper and then fired a shot from the left side of the box into the back of the net at the 51:19 mark for her fifth goal of the season.
After the Dolphins took the game's next four shots, none of which were on target, Daemen took the lead in the 75th minute. Following a Le Moyne foul just outside the penalty box, Sarah Kenny rolled the free kick to the top of the goal box, where Katja Meyer backed down her defender before turning and sliding a shot into the right side of the net at the 74:17 mark for her first goal of the year.
Daemen added an insurance goal off a corner kick with 4:14 remaining. From the right corner, Lindsay Ciaramella sent the ball towards the top right corner of the penalty box, where Kenny flicked the ball along to Stranahan, who drilled the ball from 20 yards out into the net at the 85:46 mark for her third tally of the campaign.
The Dolphins had one shot on a free kick with 50 seconds left, but it sailed over the goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Shannon Bennison (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) made one save in suffering her first career loss. Maddie Flores improved to 2-0 after making one save. Le Moyne finished the game with an 11-8 advantage in shots, including 8-4 in the second half, while Daemen posted a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (1-1) returns to action on Sunday at Georgian Court University at 12:00 p.m.
