VOLLEYBALL TOPS HOLY FAMILY, FALLS TO JEFFERSON AT WILDCAT REGIONAL INVITATIONAL

Newark, Del. – Sophomore outside hitter Mary Talty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and freshman Lexi Arena (Gilbert, Ariz./Perry) each posted nine kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Holy Family University on Saturday morning on the second day of the Wilmington University Wildcat Regional Invitational at the WU Athletics Complex. The Dolphins fell to Jefferson, 3-1, in their final game of the invitational.

Holy Family opened the match with the first six points and jumped out to a 13-3 lead before holding on for a 25-20 win in the first set. After falling behind 16-10 in the second set, the Dolphins answered with seven straight points and 10 of the next 12 to take a two-point lead. After Holy Family countered with four straight points to take the lead back, the Dolphins scored three straight points and five of the last six to win the set, 25-23, and even the match at one apiece. The Tigers opened the third set with seven of the first eight points before the Dolphins answered with 12 of the next 17 points to take the lead. Holy Family countered with five straight points and nine of the next 14 points to take a 21-18 lead, but the Dolphins regained the lead with five consecutive points. Following ties at 23, 24 and 25, the Dolphins the scored the last two points to win the set, 27-25, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. After the Tigers opened up a 10-6 lead in the fourth set, the teams went back and forth and tied five times, the last of which came at 20, before the Dolphins scored five of the last six points to win the set, 25-21, to close out the match.

Talty recorded a team-high 10 points on her nine kills and a solo block. Arena added seven digs to her career-high nine kills. Sophomore Emily Mosack (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder) dished out a then-career best 18 assists, while adding three digs and two service aces. Freshman setter Margaret King (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) added 14 assists, three digs, two service aces and two kills. Senior libero Claire Hiwiller (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home), who was Le Moyne's representative on the all-tournament team, registered a career high-tying 26 digs to lead the Dolphins defensively. Sophomore defensive specialist Meagan Murphy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) added 12 digs.

Carly Covington led the Tigers in the loss with a double-double of 16 kills (against 16 errors) and 14 digs. Allyssa Hartney turned in 13 kills, four digs, two service aces and two blocks, while Gianna Pesognelli registered 10 kills and two blocks. Morgan Silks directed the offense with 44 assists to go along with 12 digs for a double-double. Jillian Boyle led the Tigers defensively with 17 digs.

After the Dolphins and Jefferson split the first eight points of the match, the Rams scored six straight points to take the lead. Following back-and-forth play, which led to a 20-15 Jefferson lead, the Dolphins tallied eight of the next 10 points to take a 23-22 lead. The Rams answered with the last three points for a 25-23 victory. After numerous ties through the first 40 points of the second set, the Dolphins scored three straight points and five of the last six for a 25-21 win to even the match at one apiece. Following a 7-1 run by the Dolphins to take a 19-18 lead in the third set, Jefferson scored three straight points and seven of the last 10 to take the set, 25-22. Following the teams splitting the first six points of the fourth set, the Rams scored three straight points, seven of the next eight and 14 of the next 18 to open up a double-digit lead before putting the match away with five of the last six points for a 25-13 victory.

Redshirt senior middle blocker Anna Hafoka (Hurst, Texas/L.D. Bell) hit .476 en route to 13 kills, while adding five blocks. Freshman Madeleine Kennedy (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) recorded a .455 hitting percentage on her way to 11 kills, while posting five blocks. King dished out a career-best 24 assists and posted eight digs, while Mosack handed out a career-high 20 assists and recorded seven digs. Hiwiller led the team defensively with 11 digs.

Lauren Kloos led the Rams in the victory with 19 kills on a .412 hitting percentage, while adding seven digs. Abigail Kress registered 11 kills on the afternoon. Molly Hand directed the offense with 56 assists to go along with five digs, three service aces and two kills. Alexis Leddy was the defensive leader with 17 digs, while Caitlin Crespo added 11.

Le Moyne (5-4), which went 1-3 at the invitational, takes on Georgian Court University (3:00 p.m.) and Kutztown University (5:00 p.m.) in a tri-match on Friday in Lakewood, N.J.
