MEN’S SOCCER EDGED BY TOP-RANKED ADELPHI, 3-2, IN NE10 OPENER

Syracuse, N.Y. – John Aydogan scored a pair of second-half goals to lead top-ranked Adelphi University to a 3-2 win over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

After the Panthers recorded five shots over the opening 15 minutes of the game, including a pair on target, Adelphi struck for the game's first goal in the 25th minute. After collecting a loose ball at the top of the penalty box, Stephen Megaloudis tapped the ball to last year's NE10 Rookie of the Year, Paolo Marciano, who blasted a left-footed shot inside the near right post from the top of the penalty box at the 24:34 mark for his fifth goal of the season.

Less than seven minutes later, the Dolphins evened the score at one apiece. After carrying the ball into the left side of the penalty box, junior midfielder Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) sent a pass across the box to sophomore midfielder Noah Moothedan (Lutz, Fla./Steinbrenner), who fired a shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net at the 32:10 mark for his fourth goal of the campaign.

Neither team put a shot on goal over the final 12 minutes of the half as the teams went into halftime still tied at one.

Following five errant shots between the teams over the opening 25 minutes of the second half, Adelphi regained the lead in the 71st minute. Off a pass from the left side by Megaloudis, Aydogan took a touch before launching a shot into the left side of the net from 23 yards out at the 70:30 mark for his first goal of the year.

Less than four minutes later, Aydogan doubled Adelphi's lead by scoring from 10 yards out in the middle of the penalty box as the 74:15 mark after receiving a feed from the left side of the box from Taylor Kaczynski.

Following two shots on goal by the Panthers and two by the Dolphins, Le Moyne cut its deficit in half with 4:40 to play. After a shot was saved and the rebound deflected by a Dolphin, redshirt junior back Mirko Orchi (Civitavecchia, Italy/Institute Antonio Iervolino/UMKC) fired the loose ball inside the near left post from the top left corner of the penalty box for his first tally as a Dolphin.

Off a free kick following a foul by the Panthers just outside the top of the penalty box with 2:43 left, Rohrhirsch put the ball on target, but the goalkeeper punched the ball away with a dive to his right.

The Dolphins were unable to put another shot on goal before time expired.

Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered five saves in the loss. Matt Apicella recorded one save (against one goal) over the first 78:40 of the contest to earn the win. Adelphi posted a 16-12 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in the first half, while the Dolphins held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks, including 7-1 in the second half.

Le Moyne (4-1, 0-1 NE10) returns to action on Wednesday at American International at 7:00 p.m.
