Springfield, Mass. – Juniors
Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) and
Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) scored to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday night at Abdow Field.
After the first shot of the game was saved, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard 14 seconds later. Off a deflection in the middle of the penalty box, Rohrhirsch fired a shot into the left side of the net from 17 yards out at the 13:02 mark for his career-high sixth goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, the Dolphins doubled their lead. Off a corner kick from the right side by redshirt freshman midfielder
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn), Strauss knocked the ball into the net from three yards out at the 15:52 mark for his career-high third goal of the season.
American International, which upset the top-seeded Dolphins as the eighth seed in the first round of the NE10 Championship last year, recorded the final two shots of the half, but only one was on target and it was saved.
After each team had a shot saved in the opening 12 minutes of the second half, the Yellow Jackets cut their deficit in half. Off a long pass down the left sideline, Connor Hicks beat the goalkeeper to the ball along the left edge of the penalty box and flicked it with the outside of his right foot inside the near left post at the 60:26 mark for his third goal of the season.
Following a shot by Rohrhirsch that was saved and two errant shots by the Yellow Jackets, American International put the game's last two shots on target, but they were saved.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered four saves, including three in the second half, to earn his fifth victory of the year. Ben Taylor tallied three saves in the loss. Each team took eight shots in the contest, while Le Moyne posted a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
