North Easton, Mass. – Megan Giambanco converted a penalty kick early in the second half to give Stonehill College the lead en route to a 3-1 win over the Le Moyne College women's soccer team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday at Skyhawk Field.
After the Skyhawks put three shots on goal in the first six and one-half minutes of the game, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard first in the ninth minute. Off a pass by a Dolphin, a Stonehill player knocked the ball into the net at the 8:05 mark to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.
Following two more shots on goal by Stonehill, the Skyhawks evened the score at one apiece. Off a free kick by Kayla Henry following a Le Moyne foul, Nicole Geraghty netted her third goal of the season (and third goal of her career against the Dolphins) at the 19:33 mark.
Stonehill recorded an 11-3 advantage in shots over the final 25 minutes of the half, but neither team was able to score before halftime.
The Skyhawks took the lead in the 57th minute off a Le Moyne foul in the penalty box. Giambanco knocked the penalty kick off the right post and into the net at the 56:06 mark for a 2-1 lead.
Less than three minutes later, Camryn Thompson carried the ball around the Le Moyne defense before sliding a shot inside the right post for her third tally of the season (and second of her two-year career against the Dolphins).
The Dolphins registered six shots over the final 30 minutes of the game, but only one was on target and it was turned away.
Senior goalkeeper
Shannon Bennison (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) registered a career-best 11 saves between the pipes, including nine in the first half, in the loss. Kaitlin Brown stopped the only shot the Dolphins put on net to earn the victory. Stonehill finished the contest with a 31-13 advantage in shots, including 19-6 in the first half, while posting an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (1-4, 0-2 NE10), which has dropped four straight games, returns home to host American International College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
