Syracuse, N.Y. – Juniors
Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and
Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) each scored to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 2-1 season-opening victory over Lock Haven University on Thursday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Following 41 minutes of scoreless action to start the game, during which time the Dolphins held a 5-3 advantage in shots, Le Moyne opened the scoring. Off a free kick from the right side by redshirt freshman midfielder
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn), Strauss was able to head the ball inside the right post from the top of the goal box at the 41:34 mark for his third career goal.
The Dolphins doubled their lead less than 14 minutes into the second half. From the middle of the field, first-year graduate student
Goran Naric (Neuwied, Germany/Rhein-Wied-Gymnasium/Hochschule Koblenz) slid a pass up field to Rohrhirsch, who ran onto the ball and slid a shot into the right side of the net at the 58:53 mark for his sixth tally as a Dolphin.
Following just a single shot by each team over the ensuing 27 minutes, the Bald Eagles broke through. After a crossing pass from the right side was punched away from the net, Beckham Sibiski fired the loose ball inside the left post at the 85:54 mark to cut Le Moyne's lead in half.
The Bald Eagles were only able to get one more shot off the remainder of the contest, but it wasn't on target.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) tallied one save in collecting his 12th career victory between the pipes. Jason Keller turned away three shots in the loss. The Dolphins registered a 10-6 advantage in shots, including 7-3 in the first half, while posting a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Le Moyne (1-0), which has won six straight meetings with the Bald Eagles, returns to action on Sunday at Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) at 12:00 p.m.
