Anna Hafoka (Hurst, Texas/L.D. Bell) registered 13 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a season-opening 3-0 victory over Post University on Friday evening at Molloy College's Quealy Gymnasium. In the nightcap, the Dolphins fell to the host Lions, 3-1.
The Dolphins opened the season with a 25-14 win in the first set. Le Moyne recorded another 25-14 victory in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. The Dolphins closed out the match by rallying from a 16-13 deficit to take the third set, 25-23.
In her return to the court, Hafoka hit .550 and recorded five kills in the second set and four in each of the first and third sets. Freshman outside hitter
Madeleine Kennedy (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) opened her collegiate career with 11 kills, including four in the second set and five in the third. Sophomore outside hitter
Mary Talty (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) registered her first career double-double with 10 kills, including six in the first set, and a career-high 17 digs, including eight in the second set. Senior middle blocker
Jacquelyne Ghindia (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) was the fourth Dolphins with double figure kills with 10, including four in each of the first and third sets. Junior setter
Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) dished out 39 assists and posted seven digs. Defensive specialists
Emily Mosack (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Schroeder),
Claire Hiwiller (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) and
Meagan Murphy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) recorded 15, 13 and 13 digs, respectively. Talty finished the match with 10 digs and nine kills.
Shannon Veale led the Eagles in the setback with eight kills, including five in the second set. Elizabeth McGrath directed the offense with 21 assists, while Suzy Boulay and Kim Buttery led the defense with 11 digs each.
Molloy, which advanced to the East Coast Conference Championship match last year and was the fourth seeded in the NCAA East Regional, opened the match with a 25-14 win in the first set after scoring 15 of the last 19 points. The Lions doubled their lead in the match with a 25-23 victory in the second set after using a 9-2 run to take a 23-19 lead. Le Moyne stayed alive in the match with a 25-22 win the third set after putting together an 8-2 run in the middle of the set. Molloy jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the fourth set en route to putting the match away with a 25-20 win.
Hafoka led the Dolphins in the setback with 17 kills, including five kills in each of the first and third sets. With her eighth kill of the match, Hafoka became the 19th player in the program's history to record 700 career kills. Ghindia hit .435 in the match on her way to tallying 12 kills, including five in the fourth set. Yancone collected her first double-double of the year and the 13th of her career with 45 assists and a career high-tying 18 digs. She also posted 18 digs against Molloy last year.
Carly Banks and Kacey Affrunti, who were each ECC All-Conference First Team and AVCA All-Region selections last year, led the Lions with 17 kills apiece. Banks recorded six kills in the fourth set and four in each of the first and third sets. Affrunti tallied eight kills in the second set and six in the third, while also posting seven service aces in the match. Hailey Wehr totaled 14 kills in the match, including seven in the fourth set, on a .483 hitting percentage. Sophia Smith led the offense with 54 assists, while adding eight digs. Jessica Fischetti led the Lions defensively with 31 digs, including 12 in the third set, while Kathleen Doherty added 12 digs.
Le Moyne (1-1), which split its opening day matches for the third straight year, returns to action on Saturday at Queens College to take on Nyack College at 1:00 p.m. and the host Knights at 3:00 p.m.
