MEN’S BASKETBALL USES LATE RUN TO RALLY PAST SAINT MICHAEL’S, 85-80

Colchester, Vt. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team used an 18-0 run in the closing minutes to rally for an 85-80 win over Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Ross Sports Center.

Redshirt senior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) led four Dolphins in double figures with 19 points, including 14 in the second half, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Senior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) and senior guard Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) each finished with 17 points, while Brown had 14 in the second half and Roland had 12. Brown added nine rebounds and a pair of steals, while Roland had seven assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) tallied 10 of his 14 points in the second half to go with five rebounds.

Jordan Guzman led all scorers in the contest with 25 points, including 16 in the second half, while grabbing eight rebounds. Kasai Brown totaled 19 points, including 13 in the first half, and eight rebounds, while Eli DiGrande posted 13 points, nine in the first half, and six rebounds.

The Purple Knights scored the first six points of the game and 10 of the opening 13. DiGrande had the first six, Kasai Brown made a lay-up and then Guzman converted a lay-up.

The Dolphins answered with an 11-4 spurt over 2:16 to knot the score at 14 with 13:14 left in the half. Garner nailed a three-pointer, Tom Brown followed with one of his own, Roland made a fast-break lay-up and then senior guard Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) buried a three-pointer from the top-of-the-key.

Saint Michael's answered with a 10-4 run to regain control of the contest. Alvi Rodriguez started the stretch with a three-pointer and later added a free throw. DiGrande then made a lay-up and a free throw around a three-pointer by Guzman.

Following a three-pointer by junior guard Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) to trim Le Moyne's deficit in half with 7:12 left, the Purple Knights rattled off a 19-5 run over 5:49 to take the largest lead of the game. Kasai Brown tallied nine of the points, Thomas Jackson III and Jason Heter each had four and Guzman made a lay-up.

Senior guard Wyatt Self (Davidson, N.C./Pine Lake Prep/Elev8 Sports Institute/Campbell) drilled a three-pointer with six seconds left to get the Dolphins within 43-29 at halftime.

After the teams traded baskets over the opening three and one-half minutes of the second half, resulting in the Purple Knights taking a 15-point lead, the Dolphins rattled off a 13-4 run to pull within six with 13:07 left. Garner knocked down a pair of three-pointers in the span, Tom Brown scored five points and Hernandez kick started the streak with a fast-break lay-up.

Saint Michael's scored five straight points to regain its double-digit lead and had a 59-49 lead with 11:26 left before the Dolphins countered with seven straight points to close within one possession with 9:23 to play. Hernandez tallied five of the points around a fast-break lay-up by Tom Brown.

The Purple Knights tallied 10 of the next 13 points to take their last double figure lead of the contest. Kasai Brown and DiGrande each scored four points before Walker Storey knocked down a jumper with 6:26 remaining for a 69-59 lead, but that would mark the last points for the Purple Knights for 5:43.

Le Moyne answered with 18 consecutive points to take the lead. Tom Brown started the streak with a lay-up and then Garner made a three-pointer and a lay-up around a three-pointer by Roland to knot the score at 69 with 4:08 remaining. After a technical foul on the Purple Knights, Roland converted the two free throws to put the Dolphins in front. Roland followed with a three-pointer from the left corner on the next possession and Tom Brown drilled a trifecta from the top-of-the-key with 51 seconds left for a 77-69 lead.

Guzman got the Purple Knights within four eight seconds later with four free throws following a Le Moyne foul and technical foul.

Jennings put the Dolphins back up six with two free throws with 42 seconds left, but Storey answered with a three-pointer eight seconds later.

After Tom Brown and Guzman alternated two free throws each, Jennings and Roland made two free throws each around a jumper by Guzman with four seconds left to close out the game.

Le Moyne (13-5, 9-1 NE10), which has won 10 of its last 11 games, returns home to host defending East Region champion Saint Anselm College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
