Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) recorded his sixth double-double of the season to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 77-61 victory over Pace University on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Brown tallied 18 points, including 13 in the first half, and pulled down a career high-tying 14 rebounds, including nine in the first half. Sophomore guard
Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) and senior guard
Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) each scored 11 points, while Hernandez added six assists and five rebounds and Roland posted four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Redshirt senior guard
Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) was the fourth Dolphin in double digits with 10 points.
Peyton Wejnert, the leading scorer in the NE10 at 22.4 points per game, recorded 25 points, including 15 in the second half, while adding nine rebounds. Christian Adams was the only other Setter in double figures with 11 points.
After Pace opened the game's scoring, the Dolphins rattled off nine straight points and 18 of the next 22 to take their largest lead of the half. Hernandez scored the first four points, while junior guard
Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) had five points in the span and Roland had four.
Pace answered back with nine consecutive points to trim its deficit to three. Ray Montilus had five of the points and Wejnert had the other four.
The Dolphins responded with a 13-4 run to take their second 12-point lead of the half. Brown led the run with 11 points, while Garner converted a pair of free throws.
After Hernandez gave the Dolphins a 33-21 lead with 4:34 left, the Setters scored eight straight points to get within four for the final time in the half. Adams and Tyrone Cohen Jr. nailed three-pointers around two free throws by Wejnert.
Brown completed the scoring in the half with a lay-up with 1:08 left to give the Dolphins a 36-29 lead at the intermission.
The Dolphins scored five of the first seven points of the second half to take a 41-31 lead. Sophomore forward
BB Chuks-Mady (Hamilton, Ontario/GTA Prep) scored off a pass from Roland, who followed with a three-pointer.
Pace countered with an 8-2 run to get back within four for the final time. Wejnert scored five of the points around a three-pointer by Adams.
Le Moyne answered with seven straight points and 17 of the next 23 to regain control of the game. Garner scored six of the points, graduate student forward
Lonnie Rivera (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)/American/Wagner) had five, Hernandez bookended the streak with lay-ups and Brown had a fast-break dunk.
Following a 5-0 spurt by the Setters, the Dolphins put the game away with a 12-3 run over five minutes. Roland scored at the beginning and end of the span, while four other Dolphins also scored in the stretch.
The teams alternated points over the final three minutes to deliver the final score.
Le Moyne (10-4, 6-0 NE10), which improves to 36-6 against Southwest Division foes since the start of the 2016-17 season, opens crossover action on Saturday at Stonehill College at 3:30 p.m.
