MEN’S BASKETBALL CLINCHES FOURTH STRAIGHT SOUTHWEST DIVISION TITLE WITH 89-81 WIN AT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Springfield, Mass. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team had five players score in double figures en route to clinching its fourth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division regular season title with an 89-81 win over American International College on Wednesday evening at Butova Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) led the Dolphins with 20 points, 16 of which he scored in the second half. Senior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) flirted with a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Senior guard Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) totaled nine of his 11 points in the first half. Senior guard Zay Jennings (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic/Caldwell) recorded nine of his 10 points in the second half, while adding seven rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) also tallied 10 points.

Jordan Vidal led four Yellow Jackets in double figures with 19 points, including 12 in the second half. Logan Santiago registered 14 of his 17 points in the second half, while adding seven rebounds. Zekiah Owens tallied 15 points and Branislav Terzic scored 10.

After the teams traded baskets over the opening four minutes, Terzic made two free throws and Owens converted his third shot of the game to give the Yellow Jackets their first five-point lead of the game.

Following six points from each team over the next three minutes, the Dolphins recorded a 12-3 run to take a 24-20 lead with 8:02 remaining. Hernandez made a pair of shots in the paint, junior guard Tim Leavell (Marion, Ind./Marion/State Fair C.C.) and graduate student forward Lonnie Rivera (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)/American/Wagner) drilled three-pointers and Garner made two fouls shots.

After Vidal made two free throws to get the Yellow Jackets within 27-26 with 6:34 left in the half, the Dolphins rattled off 18 of the next 21 points to open up a 45-29 in the final minute. Brown had seven of the points, Roland hit a pair of three-pointers and three others combined for the other five points.

Goree Venable Gonzalez scored in the final points of the half to get the Yellow Jackets within 45-31 at the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets scored 12 of the first 19 points of the second half to cut their deficit to 52-43 with 15:36 to play. Five players scored in the span, led by four points from AIC.
 
Following alternating points by Jennings and Terzic, the Dolphins scored nine straight points to take a 67-49 lead with 11:07 to play. Garner recorded five of the points on a three-pointer and a fast-break jumper.

After the teams trade points over the next three minutes, the Yellow Jackets, specifically Santiago, posted an 8-1 run to close within 74-65 with 5:49 to play.

Le Moyne answered with seven straight points to push its lead back to 16 with 3:00 left. Garner made a free throw and then Hernandez scored six straight points.

After Jennings put the Dolphins up 85-70 with 2:19 left, the Yellow Jackets scored 11 of the next 13 points to close within 87-81 with 14.3 seconds remaining. Vidal scored six points around a lay-up by Owens and a three-pointer by Santiago to get within two possessions.

Graduate student guard Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) closed out the game's scoring with two free throws with 13.3 seconds left.
 
Le Moyne (19-7, 15-3 NE10), which is the first team to win four straight division titles, closes out the regular season on Tuesday against Pace University at 7:00 p.m.
