SECOND-HALF RALLY NOT ENOUGH AS MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS REGULAR SEASON FINALE, 85-73, TO PACE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Peyton Wejnert recorded a double-double to lead Pace University to an 85-73 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.

Despite the loss, the Dolphins enter the NE10 Championships as the top seed in the Southwest Division and will host a quarterfinal game on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Dolphins will take on either Bentley University, the fourth seed in the Northeast Division, or the University of New Haven, the fifth seed from the Southwest Division. The Falcons host the Chargers in a first round matchup on Friday at 5:00 p.m.

Redshirt senior guard Malik Garner (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow/Sunrise Christian Academy/Saginaw Valley State) and graduate student forward Lonnie Rivera (Spring Valley, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)/American/Wagner) led the Dolphins offensively with 14 points each. Graduate student guard Oshea Gairey (Toronto, Ontario/St. John's Catholic Prep (Md.)/Simon Fraser) scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Senior forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) posted 10 points and a team-best seven rebounds.

Wejnert finished the contest with 28 points, including 16 in the second half, and 10 rebounds. Brandon Jacobs scored seven points in each half, while dishing out six assists and grabbing five rebounds. Bryan Powell came off the bench to record 13 points, including nine in the first half, and nine rebounds, including seven offensive. Christian Adams posted eight of his 12 points in the first half.

After Garner put the Dolphins up 3-2 with a three-pointer, the Setters scored seven straight points and 18 of the next 22 to take a 20-7 lead with 13:44 left in the first half. Wejnert scored nine of the points, while Adams posted four.

Following a three-pointer by Jacobs to put the Setters up 24-10 with 11:48 left, the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight points to cut their deficit to four with 9:00 to go. Gairey had five of the points, while sophomore guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) capped the streak with a three-pointer.

Pace closed out the half with a 20-6 run to take a 47-28 lead into the intermission. Powell registered nine of the points, while five others combined for the remaining nine points.

The Dolphins, who dropped back-to-back regular season home games for the first time since January 2016, opened the second half with a 21-4 run to cut their deficit to just two after 6:13. Senior guard Ryan Roland (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Mercyhurst) scored the first five points, Garner made back-to-back fast-break lay-ups, Rivera drained consecutive three-pointers, Brown went coast-to-coast for a lay-up, Gairey recorded a conventional three-point play and then Hernandez made a foul shot.

Pace scored five straight points to extend its lead back to seven, but the Dolphins countered with a 7-0 streak to knot the score for the first time. Gairey made a lay-up, Brown drilled a three-pointer and then redshirt senior forward Souleymane Gueye (Dakar, Senegal/Hachioji Academy (Tokyo, Japan)/Snow College) knocked down a jumper to even the score at 56 with 10:10 to play.

Following four points by Wejnert around a free throw by Roland, the Dolphins scored five straight points on a three-pointer by Garner and a driving lay-up by Rivera to take their first lead in 31:03 of action.

Pace answered with a pair of 8-0 runs around a Rivera three-pointer to regain control of the game. Wejnert had four points in each 8-0 spurt, while four others each scored two points in the extended streak.

The Dolphins scored the next five points to get within 76-70 with 2:11 to play, but the Setters scored nine of the next 10 points to put the game away. Wejnert made four free throws, Jacobs made two and Powell converted a put-back lay-up.
