Shippensburg, Pa. – Sophomore shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) singled to break a tie to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 12-9 win over Shippensburg University in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Fairchild Field. The Raiders won the opener, 9-0.
Shippensburg opened the scoring in the second game with a run in the first inning. Center fielder Zack Zoller led off with a single to left field and moved to second on a bunt. After taking third on a wild pitch, Zoller scored on a single down the left field line by catcher Ben Werkheiser.
Le Moyne took its first lead of the day with four runs on two hits in the second inning. Junior right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior third baseman
Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew walks to start the inning. Following a pair of outs, senior center fielder
Justin Tuey (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) singled to first base to drive in Smith. Junior designated hitter
Jeff Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Odyssey) followed with a three-run homer to left field.
The Raiders got one run back in the bottom of the second. Designated hitter Chase Zurawski drew a walk to start the inning, took second on a two-out single by second baseman Joe Barbera and scored on an error by the second baseman as Werkheiser reached on a fielder's choice.
Shippensburg regained the lead with three runs on four hits in the third. First baseman Lake Lloyd led off with a single through the left side and moved to third on a one-out single by shortstop Jacob Pollock. Zurawski then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to knock in Lloyd. After a single by left fielder Nick Zanic, Zoller tripled to left field to plate Pollock and Zanic for the lead.
Le Moyne exploded for seven runs on five hits in the fourth inning to take the lead back. Sophomore catcher
Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) drew a walk with one out, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score the tying run on a single to right by Tuey. After Wilson was intentionally walked, Nevins singled to center to knock in Tuey. Following a single to the pitcher by sophomore first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) to load the bases, senior left fielder
Nicholas Jacques (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Shenendehowa) walked on five pitches to force in Wilson. Smith then singled to left center to plate Nevins and Roden and force a pitching change. After Jacques scored on a wild pitch, Smith scored from second on a single to center by Miller for an 11-5 lead.
The Raiders answered with a run on three hits in the fourth. Werkheiser was hit by a pitch to start the inning, moved to second on a one-out single by Lloyd, took third on a single to left by third baseman Justin Darden and scored on a single to right by Pollock.
Shippensburg added another run in the fifth. Barbera singled to right with one out, stole second and scored on a two-out single by right fielder Scout Knotts.
Le Moyne pushed its lead back to five with a run in the top of the sixth. Roden walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs and scored on a double down the left field line by Smith.
Shippensburg scored twice and brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, but could not cut into its deficit any further. Pinch-hitter Logan Williamson led off with a double down the left field line and Barbera was hit by a pitch with one out. After Werkheiser singled to load the bases, Knotts singled to left to drive in Williamson and Barbera. The next two batters were retired to end the game.
Sophomore righty
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) earned his first win of the season after tossing the final three and two-thirds innings, while striking out three. Tuey finished the contest with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Smith had two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Chris Horst took the loss for the Raiders after allowing seven runs over one and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen.
Shippensburg scored the only runs it would need in the opening game with four in the first inning on four hits and a Le Moyne error. Zoller doubled to start the frame and
Vavaroutsos was hit by a pitch. Werkheiser then tripled to center field to knock in Zoller and Vavaroutsos, while scoring on an error by the second baseman. Knotts then singled, stole second with one out and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Lloyd.
The Raiders added a run in the third inning. Knotts led off with a double to left field and came around to score on a single to second by Williamson.
Shippensburg took a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Barbera led off with a single to left field and moved to second on an error by the left fielder. After taking third on a wild pitch, Barbera scored on a double to left center by Zoller.
The Raiders finished their scoring with three runs on three hits in the sixth. After Lloyd walked to start the inning, Darden homered to left field. Barbera followed with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left by Zoller.
Junior righty
Ryan Murphy (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) and 10 hits over four innings, while striking out seven. Wilson had two of Le Moyne's seven hits in the game. Kyle Lysy earned the win for the Raiders after striking out six over six innings, while yielding just six hits.
Le Moyne (6-4) completes its series with the Raiders on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
