SECOND-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE OPENS NE10 PLAY WITH 16-9 WIN AT 19TH-RANKED BENTLEY

Waltham, Mass. – Senior attackman Matt Hutchings (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) recorded a career-high eight points to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 16-9 win over Bentley University in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday at Bentley Field.
 
With his eight points, Hutchings moved from 18th place to 13th place on the program's all-time points list and now has 139 over 50 games. With five goals, which tied his career high, he moved from 17th place to a three-way tie for 14th place on the goals list with 88 in his career.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first two goals and five of the first six. Hutchings started the scoring at the 12:31 mark with his 10th goal of the season. Junior midfielder Ben McCreary (Cicero, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) followed at the 7:53 mark with his first goal of the year after collecting a pass from freshman midfielder Joel Firth (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse), who made his first career start.

Bentley got on the scoreboard with 6:55 left as Matt Brooks netted his first goal of the season.

Le Moyne scored the next three goals in a span of 1:02. Graduate student midfielder Nick Cunningham (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Loyola) pushed the margin back to two with his fourth goal of the year with 5:50 left in the quarter. Sophomore attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) tallied his fifth goal of the year 32 seconds later off a feed from Hutchings. Sheehan scored again 30 seconds later after taking a pass from junior midfielder Evan Kelly (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) for the final goal of the quarter.
 
Bentley scored the first three goals of the second quarter to cut its deficit to one. Matty O'Brien started the run at the 11:34 mark after taking a pass from Michael Fricke. Ben Baldasaro tallied an unassisted goal just 43 seconds later. Joey Teroriero followed at the 7:38 mark with his first goal of the season off a pass from Ryan Birch.

The Dolphins scored the final two goals of the second quarter, in a span of 31 seconds, to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. In an extra-man situation, Hutchings netted his second goal of the day with 2:42 left after receiving a pass from Sheehan. Sophomore midfielder Colin Sypek (Lake Worth, Fla./American Heritage School) capped the half's scoring with 2:11 remaining.

Le Moyne scored the first three goals of the third quarter to take a 10-4 lead. Sypek started the spurt with his fourth goal of the year at the 10:42 mark off a feed from Hutchings, who followed with an unassisted goal 45 seconds later. Sophomore midfielder John Bergan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) go the Dolphins into double-digits with his first goal of the season with 8:29 left off a dish from Hutchings.

The Falcons countered with the last two goals of the stanza. Walker Gautier scored his first goal of the season just 29 seeonds after Bergan and then found the back of the net again with 5:55 left off a pass from Mark Galione.

The Dolphins blew the game open with the first six goals of the fourth quarter. Hutchings ignited the outburst with his 13th goal of the season at the 13:14 mark after collecting a pass from Sheehan, who then fed senior attackman Riley Larson (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) 43 seconds later for his sixth goal of the campaign. Larson scored again 40 seconds later after receiving the ball from McCreary. Following almost three and one-half minutes of scoreless play, Hutchings registered an unassisted goal from the left alley. Just 28 seconds later, Bergan netted an unassisted goal in an extra-man situation. Sypek completed the run with his third of the day after taking a pass from Kelly to put the Dolphins up by double figures.

Bentley scored three times in the final 3:33 to deliver the final margin. Baldasaro started the spurt with 3:33 left with his second of the game. Fricke tallied his first goal of the season with 2:02 left and Birch concluded the game's scoring with 41 seconds left off a feed from O'Brien.

Senior goalkeeper Riley Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Onondaga C.C.) recorded six saves, against eight goals, over 57:58 between the pipes to earn the victory. Michael Haggan tallied 13 saves, including four in each of the third and fourth quarters, in the loss for the Falcons.
 
Le Moyne (3-0, 1-0 NE10), which won its 25th straight game over the Falcons, returns to action on Wednesday against Lake Erie College at Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Buffalo at 3:15 p.m.
