WOMEN'S SOCCER OFFENSE ERUPTS IN 5-1 WIN OVER NEW HAVEN ON SENIOR DAY

Syracuse, N.Y. - Following a rainy senior day celebration at Ted Grant Field on Saturday afternoon, the Le Moyne College women's soccer team scored a season-high five goals to earn a 5-1 Northeast-10 Conference win against the visiting University of New Haven Chargers.

In the 32nd minute of the match graduate student Maddison Vine (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) chased down a pass on the left side of the New Haven 18-yard box and sent a cross toward the middle of the penalty area. At the edge of the six yard box in front of the net Amya Naja (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glen Falls) won the ball for a moment, but was swarmed by two defenders who poked it away from the junior forward towards the left center portion of the 18-yard box. Vine sprinted back into the picture, circled around the loose ball and, before the two New Haven defenders scrambling to close her down could get to her, sent a one time shot flying past Chargers goalkeeper Paige Davis that rippled the back of the net and gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead.

With just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half, Vine sent a pass to redshirt-freshman Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) in the left center portion of the pitch, about 35 yards from goal. Casey faced up her defender and dribbled into the Le Moyne attacking third. With a quick move to her left she got past her defender and sprinted into the 18-yard box. Just before her defender was able to recover and contest the shot, Casey hit the ball with her left foot and sent it floating over the head of Davis and into the right side of the net to give Le Moyne a 2-0 lead.

The consistent downpour of rain that occurred all morning and throughout the match benefited the Chargers in the 40th minute when Charlie Griffiths' shot slipped through the hands of Le Moyne goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) and rolled past the goal line to put New Haven on the board and cut Le Moyne's lead in half.

A few minutes into the second half, first year defender Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) got the ball on the right side of the New Haven penalty area and sent a pass to Naja running parallel to her left. Naja took her first touch towards the goal line, created space from her defender and played the ball on the ground across the face of the goal. Le Moyne junior midfielder Katharine Stanard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) sprinted past a New Haven defender, was first to Naja's pass and from right in front of the net tapped the ball into the goal to extend Le Moyne's lead to 3-1.

In the 70th minute Le Moyne's Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) sent a cross off a corner kick towards the edge of the six yard box in the New Haven penalty area. Casey was first to it, and headed it on-goal out of Davis' arms reach, however New Haven defender Daniela Perez was standing on the goal line and blocked Casey's header with her body to keep it out of the net. The ball dropped right in front of Casey, who continued her momentum forward, pouncing on the ball and sending a shot with her left foot from point blank range past Davis for her second goal of the match to give Le Moyne a 4-1 lead.

The Dolphins scored their fifth and final goal of the match in the 82nd minute when senior midfielder Ali Greco (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), standing about 40 yards from goal, sent a pass over the New Haven defense and into the path of Naja who ran onto the ball just as it rolled into the right side of the 18-yard box. Naja's first touch was a shot masterfully floated over the goalkeeper and placed into the bottom left side of the net, tucked just inside the left post for her third goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Meaghan Wilson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made one save in net for the Dolphins, and Moreau made four second half saves to maintain Le Moyne's lead.

Here's what Le Moyne head coach Carrie Bonus had to say after the match:

"Very happy with the result, really happy with how we played. We were able to keep possession and capitalize on our chances today, that's really what we've been talking about all season and it all came together for us today, so I'm really happy with the team effort."

The Le Moyne College women's soccer team returns to Ted Grant Field at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20 to take on The College of Saint Rose.
