LATE GOAL GIVES MEN'S SOCCER 1-0 WIN AT SAINT ANSELM

Manchester, N.H. - The Le Moyne College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory on the road against Saint Anselm College at Melucci Field Tuesday afternoon with a goal from redshirt-freshman defender Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) off a penalty kick in the 86th minute. The Dolphins improve to 7-5-0 on the season, and once again have a .500 winning percentage in conference matches.

With 25 minutes remaining in the first half, Saint Anselm threw the ball in from the right touchline. The ball was thrown to midfield where Le Moyne left back Goodrich headed the ball diagonally forward to redshirt-junior midfielder Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn) who headed it diagonally backwards to senior midfielder Terence Crysler-Howard (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto Prep School). Crysler-Howard brought the ball down and passed it to graduate forward Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne) at the edge of the Le Moyne attacking third. Stern turned, analyzed his surroundings, took a menacing dribble towards goal and from 30 yards out let loose a line drive shot on goal that Hawks goalkeeper Brian Underhill had to punch away. The ball flew past Le Moyne forward Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) crashing towards goal for the rebound, and the Hawks were able to escape the situation unscathed.

A couple minutes later Goodrich stole the ball on the left side of Saint Anselm's half of the field and passed it to Henne at the top of the Hawks 18-yard box. Henne turned and sent a pass to Stern in the right side of the Saint Anselm penalty area. Stern took a touch and ripped a shot with his right foot in the air that Underhill caught to keep the game scoreless.

In the 48th minute Goodrich attacked the Saint Anselm defense down the left wing and won a corner kick for the Dolphins. Henne took the corner from the left side and sent a cross towards the near post where senior defender Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany/Schul-und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin/ Bridgeport) got to the ball first and sent a header on goal that was kept out of the net by Underhill.

Schmelcher stepped forward to interrupt a pass off a Hawks throw in the 57th minute. The ball bounced to Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) on the left touchline, who then passed it to Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius). Falcone turned, let the ball roll past him and poked it to Sperduto at midfield. With his back to goal Sperduto chested it to his right towards the left touchline into the path of Falcone. With two Saint Anselm defenders in close pursuit Falcone dribbled into the Le Moyne attacking third and after a heavy touch put the ball at Henne's feet. Henne played it forward to Falcone who continued his run towards goal and entered the Saint Anselm penalty area. Falcone sent a cross with his left foot on the ground across the face of the goal to Sperduto who, from the edge of the six-yard box got his right foot on the cross and redirected it on frame, however Underhill went to ground and made an impressive one arm save to deny Sperduto.

With four minutes left in the second half Goodrich took a corner kick from the right side and sent a cross in the air that bounced in the middle of the penalty area and then was kicked back out toward the corner flag that it came from. Schmelcher got on the ball and passed it back to Goodrich, who dashed into the Hawks penalty area, made a move to his left and was taken down by a Saint Anselm defender, earning a penalty kick for the Dolphins.

Goodrich took the penalty kick himself, taking the shot with his left foot and sending it past the diving Underhill into the right side of the net to give Le Moyne a late 1-0 lead.

The Dolphins held the lead and came away with the 1-0 road victory thanks to the work of goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and defenders Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Ben Quigley (Perth, Scotland/Community School of Auchterarder/University of Stirling), Schmelcher and Goodrich, all of whom played the full 90 minutes in the Le Moyne back line.

The Le Moyne College men's soccer team returns home to take on Saint Michael's College on Saturday, October 23 at 12:00 p.m. EST at Ted Grant Field.
