WOMEN'S SOCCER SUFFERS 3-0 LOSS AT SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

New Haven, Conn. - The Le Moyne College women's soccer team dropped an away match against Northeast-10 conference opponent Southern Connecticut State University by a score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jess Dow Field.

Rachel Wengender (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) earned a free kick just outside the Owls 18-yard box in the fifth minute. Wengender took the free kick quickly, and the Dolphins thought they scored the game's opening goal when the ball appeared to bounce off the crossbar and back into the field of play where graduate student Maddison Vine (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) knocked it into the back of the net. However the sideline referee signaled that Wengender's shot off the free kick hit the football goal post directly above the soccer crossbar, meaning the ball went out of bounds, Vine's goal was negated, the Owls received a goal kick, and the score remained 0-0.

In the 17th minute Le Moyne junior Katharine Stanard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) stole the ball in the Owls defensive third and sent a pass to Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) in the middle of the field, who ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Southern Connecticut State goalkeeper Allie Smith.

Southern Connecticut State broke the tie in the 19th minute when Kaitlyn D'Amico was able to get a shot off in the Le Moyne penalty area that flew into the upper right corner of the net to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.

Le Moyne goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) made the third of her four saves on the day in the 54th minute when she stopped a shot from freshman Kylee Slavik to keep the Le Moyne deficit at one goal.

The Owls were able to double their lead in the 59th minute when Stavik found Kelsey Burr standing on the edge of the six-yard box. Burr deposited the ball into the back of the net to extend her team's lead to 2-0.

Less than a minute later the Owls put the game out of reach when Aries Bell scored off an Emma McMurray assist to give Southern Connecticut State their third goal of the match.

Le Moyne first year Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) was able to put two shots on goal during the final thirty minutes of the contest, but the Dolphins were unable to get on the board, falling to SCSU 3-0 at Jess Dow Field.

The Le Moyne College women's soccer team returns home to take on Assumption University on Tuesday, October 5 at 4:00 p.m. at Ted Grant Field.
