GRECO SCORES A BRACE DURING WOMEN'S SOCCER 3-3 DRAW AGAINST VISITING ASSUMPTION

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's soccer team fought to a 3-3 draw against Assumption University on Tuesday evening at Ted Grant Field. The Dolphins got off to a fast start against the Greyhounds, scoring two quick goals to take a commanding lead within the first 15 minutes of the match.

In the eighth minute of the contest, the Dolphins forced an Assumption turnover in the Greyhounds defensive third. The ball rolled to Katharine Stanard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) who turned towards goal and played a perfect through ball to Amya Naja (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) in behind the Assumption defense. First year goalkeeper Julia Walsh came sprinting off her line to challenge Naja, but the junior forward did well to evade the challenge by tapping the ball to her left, past the oncoming Walsh and placing it in the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give the Dolphins an early 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later Le Moyne earned a corner kick. As graduate student Maddison Vine (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Lisbon) played the ball across from the left corner flag, Ali Greco (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), standing in front of the net, was shoved down by Walsh and the referee awarded the Dolphins a penalty kick. Greco grabbed the ball and set it on the penalty mark to take it herself.

"I've been practicing them [penalty kicks]" said Greco after the game, "Usually when you're the person that's fouled, it's unlikely you're going to take the penalty kick, however I felt composed enough and in the right mindset to get the job done." the senior midfielder added.

And get the job done she did. With an efficient and confident two step run-up Greco serenely placed the ball in the upper left side of the net to double the Dolphins lead in the 11th minute.

Down 2-0, the Greyhounds pushed hard for their first goal. Kate Carleson, making her presence known in the Assumption offensive third immediately upon entering the match off the bench, got behind the Le Moyne defense in the 34th minute on a pass from Diana Bruggeman and slid the ball past Le Moyne goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) to cut the Dolphins' lead in half.

The three headed monster of Bruggeman, Carleson and junior forward Annie Irwin continued to pose problems for the Le Moyne back line during the second half. Carly Sevigny played a ball down the right sideline to Irwin, who carried it into the Dolphins penalty area and sent a shot with her left foot beyond the diving Moreau in the 61st minute to tie the match at two goals apiece.

10 minutes later Vine sent a cross into the middle of the Assumption penalty area off a Le Moyne corner kick. Greco, as if she was shot out of a cannon, darted towards the near post and met the incoming ball with her forehead, sending a rocket of a shot whizzing past Walsh into the back of the net for her second goal of the game to give Le Moyne a 3-2 lead. Greco, who said after the game that scoring is a mentality, has been telling herself that she will score, and she willed that reality into existence by taking full advantage of her opportunities on Tuesday evening.

"Watching the ball go past the goalie is an unmatched feeling… I just wanna win so bad, and I'll do whatever I can to sacrifice my body to try and get the ball in the back of the net for us." said Greco.

The Dolphins back line of Maddie Rhodes (Andover, Mass./Andover), Vittoria Fuduli (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), Reagan Sames (Rexford, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) continued to battle with the potent Greyhound attack in what became a very intense and physical contest down the stretch. Moreau finished with eight saves in net for the Dolphins, but conceded the equalizer in the 79th minute when Irwin found Carleson streaking down the left sideline for a breakaway shot attempt from 10 yards out that rippled the back of the net to tie the game at three goals each.

At the end of regulation the score was still tied at 3-3, sending the match to extra time.

With eight minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Sames sent a free kick from just in front of midfield towards the Assumption 18-yard box. At the top of the box, Greco, with her back facing the net, flicked the ball with her head towards the back post to Vine, but Walsh was able to smother the ball immediately after Vine took her first touch.

One minute later, Assumption's Julia Sferlazza ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box that Moreau dealt with by pushing the ball above the crossbar for a Greyhounds corner kick.

One minute into the second extra time period, the ball was cleared out of the Greyhounds defensive third and landed with Fuduli on the right side of the pitch just in front of half field. Fuduli sent a beautiful pass across the field and over the defense to a wide open Maddison Vine in the left side of Assumption's penalty area, but Walsh was able to make a crucial stop to keep the score level.

Greco got a shot off in the 109th minute, but was unable to complete the hat trick, and the match ended in a draw.

The Le Moyne College women's soccer team (1-5-3) will visit Southern New Hampshire University, currently ranked #7 in the nation, on Saturday, October 9 at 12:00 p.m. at Penmen Stadium.
