Albany, N.Y. - The #3 seed College of Saint Rose Golden Knights scored in the 108th minute to defeat the #6 seed Le Moyne College Dolphins men's soccer team by a score of 3-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference Championships Quarterfinals match at the Plumeri Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Le Moyne came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the second half, but the Golden Knights scored in the 90th minute to tie the score at 2-2 and send the match to extra time. With three minutes left in the second extra time period and the game on the verge of heading to penalty kicks, Oskar Aaströem scored a header off a free kick taken by Lucas Malmquist to end the match and send Saint Rose to the conference semifinals.
Le Moyne goalkeeper Josh Mahr (Fayetteville, N.Y/Fayetteville-Manlius), who made eight saves throughout the match, came up big early for the Dolphins, stopping Saint Rose shots in the third and fourth minutes of the match. At the 2:54 mark, Saint Rose sent a long free kick from the left sideline towards the middle of the Le Moyne penalty area. The ball was headed to the back post and fell to Golden Knights sophomore defender Nick Koenig, who got the ball with no one between him and the keeper. From within the six-yard box, Koenig put a shot on goal, but Mahr stood tall, made the point blank save and knocked the ball out for a corner to keep the match scoreless. Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Harry Soederlind took a Saint Rose corner kick and sent the ball toward the top of the penalty area. The ball was headed in front of Mahr and Simon Schouby lunged at it, knocking the ball past Mahr towards the Le Moyne goal line, but Joe Falcone (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) was there to clear it away for the Dolphins.
In the fifth minute the Dolphins created a chance of their own. Graduate forward Robert Rohrhirsch (Garching bei München, Germany/Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Garching/Munich University of Applied Sciences) got the ball in the left-center portion of the Le Moyne attacking third and dropped the ball off to redshirt-junior midfielder Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany/Gymnasium Buckhorn), who, from about 23 yard away out, took a shot with his right foot that sliced high and wide-right of the net and flew out of bounds for a goal kick.Â
In the 19th minute Saint Rose earned a free kick on the right side of their attacking third. Simon Schouby took the free kick and sent a pass on the ground towards the top of the Le Moyne penalty area. Nick Koenig ran onto the ball and from about 11 yards out took a one-time shot with his right foot that rolled on the ground into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.Â
With 14:09 remaining in the first half, defensive pressure from Rohrhirsch and Henne caused the Golden Knights to commit a turnover in their own defensive third. Rohrhirsch stole the ball and charged towards goal. The graduate forward took two dribbles to the top of the 18-yard box before he let loose a shot with his right foot on the ground that was scooped up by Saint Rose goalkeeper Tomas Rozman.
In the 58th minute, Falcone got the ball near midfield and sent a hard pass to senior forward Brandon Mimas (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UAlbany) in the right side of the Le Moyne attacking third. Mimas brought in the pass, was immediately swarmed by two Saint Rose defenders and just got off a pass to freshman forward Michael Sparkes (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Ninians). Sparkes carried the ball to his left and sent a pass to Henne. Henne found space in front of him, took a touch towards goal and from about 23 yards out hit a shot with his right foot that deflected off Falcone, who was standing about 15 yards from goal, and bounced into the bottom left corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1.Â
With 12:43 left in the second half, senior defender Patrick Strauss (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius), who for the 17th consecutive game played the entire match for Le Moyne, sent a pass to Henne at midfield. Henne turned and took two dribbles up field before knocking a pass to Sparkes, standing about 36 yards from goal. Sparkes turned and sent a through ball towards the right corner flag, into the path of forward Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne) sprinting down the right wing. Stern chased down the ball and crossed it to the middle of the Golden Knights penalty area. Henne got a touch on it, but two Saint Rose defenders converged on him and poked it away. Owen Bauer (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/UNC Asheville) stepped towards the loose ball and from about eight yards out ripped a line drive with his right foot that whizzed by the left shoulder of Rozman and rippled the back of the net to give the Dolphins a 2-1 lead.Â
Le Moyne withstood the Golden Knights efforts to equalize up until the last minute of the match. With 37 seconds left Mahr sent a long punt into the Saint Rose half of the field. It was kicked out of the air by a Golden Knights player towards the middle of the pitch. The ball was then headed twice by Saint Rose into their attacking third. Senior defender Jonas Schmelcher (Berlin, Germany/Schul-und Leistungssportzentrum Berlin/ Bridgeport) headed away an attempted pass over the Le Moyne defense, but Malmquist regained possession for Saint Rose, and hit the ball on the ground into the penalty area. Josh Elliott got the ball and took a shot on goal that went over the head of Mahr and into the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2 with under 30 seconds remaining in regulation.Â
With 6:14 left in the first extra time period, Aaströem got the ball at the top of the Le Moyne 18-yard box and hit a one-time shot at the top of the net, but Mahr was there to make the save. Mahr made another stop in the 96th minute when Josh Elliott put a shot on goal.Â
With 2:48 left in the second extra time period and the match minutes away from being sent to penalty kicks, the Golden Knights earned a free kick on the right side of their attacking third. Malmquist took the free kick and lofted the ball to the far post where Aaströem got free and dove to meet the ball with his forehead. Aaströem's header went straight into the ground and took a high bounce over the head of Mahr and into the back of the net to end the match and give Saint Rose a 3-2 victory, sending them to the Northeast-10 Conference Championships Semifinals.
Here's what head coach Tom Bonus had to say after the match:
"I appreciate the hard work that we put in for the second half. Tough loss. We didn't meet our goals we set out to achieve in the beginning of this year. Not from lack of handwork and commitment I appreciate the effort from the boys and wish all the seniors nothing but the best. We have areas we must improve on as a team as we move forward."Â
