PACE SCORES FINAL FIVE POINTS FOR 68-67 WIN OVER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Austin Gilbertson scored five points in the last 18 seconds to lift Pace University to a 68-67 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Monday night at Ted Grant Court.

"I thought we battled really well and I thought we showed a lot of heart, a lot of resiliency," said head coach Nate Champion '14. "We kind of struggled with the 2-3 zone and the way that they mixed it up a little bit, but I thought we fought back well. We gave ourselves a great shot. Obviously, things don't go your way sometimes. Obviously I'm not too happy with that, but at the end of the day, we've got to make our free throws and we've got to continue to play defense the right way."

Junior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) led the Dolphins offensively with 18 points, including nine in each half, while adding five rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Redshirt freshman guard Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School) posted six points in each half and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Senior forward Nicholas Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy/Frostburg St./Montgomery College) tied his season-high with 11 points to go along with six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Senior guard Payton Hudson (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Saviour Lutheran/Iona/Independence C.C.) recorded 10 points for the third time this season and posted three steals.

Brandon Powell led four Setters in double figures with 20 points, including 13 in the first half, while adding a game-high 11 rebounds and four steals. Gilbertson scored 10 of his 17 points in the second half, while Bryan Powell posted 11 of his 13 points in the second stanza. Brandon Jacobs was the fourth Setter in twin figures with 10 points, while adding four assists.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points and led 11-6 after five minutes of action. Wilson scored five of the points in the span.

Pace responded with nine of the next 11 points to take its first lead of the game. Jacobs had the first three and Brandon Powell netted the last six.

After Pace pushed its lead to 20-17 with 8:53 left in the half, the Dolphins scored seven points in a row. Wilson made a jumper, third-year sophomore guard Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) hit a jumper in the paint and then graduate student forward Armon Nasseri (Youngstown, Ohio/Spire Academy/Mercyhurst/Roberts Wesleyan) recorded a conventional three-point play.

The Setters countered with nine points around a three-pointer by Hudson to regain the lead. Marc Dadika scored the first four points to tie the score and then Jacobs knocked down a fast-break jumper and Brandon Powell buried a three-pointer for a 29-27 edge with 3:16 remaining in the half.

Following ties at 29 and 31, the Setters went up 35-32 with just over one minute left in the half. Hudson then drilled a three-pointer with 21 seconds left to even the score at 35 heading into the intermission.

After the teams went back and forth over the opening six minutes of the second half, the Dolphins scored five points in a row for a 47-42 lead. Johnson had a dunk and then redshirt freshman guard Jack Poirier (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) drained a three-pointer.

Pace answered back with 10 of the next 12 points to take a three-point lead. Brandon Powell started the run with a three-pointer, Bryan Powell had a conventional three-point play, Brandon Powell scored off a steal in the backcourt and then Bryan Powell made a shot in the paint for a 52-49 lead with 8:28 to play.

Following a three-point play by Davis and four points from Bryan Powell in the paint, Wilson hit a three-pointer and a lay-up to put the Dolphins back in front, but it was short lived as Christian Adams and Bryan Powell scored in the paint for a 60-57 lead with 4:42 remaining.

Le Moyne responded with six straight points to take a three-point lead of its own with 2:16 left. Johnson made two free throws and a jumper for the lead and Wilson followed with a jumper of his own.

Jacobs responded with a three-pointer from the top-of-the key to even the score at 63 with 1:49 to play.

Nasseri gave the lead back to the Dolphins with a lay-up with 1:36 left, redshirt freshman guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School) made a foul shot with 1:12 to go and then Washington put the Dolphins up by four with a free throw with 33 seconds left.

Gilbertson got the Setters back within one with an off-balance three-pointer with 18 seconds left.

After a Pace timeout, the Setters committed a foul with 14 seconds left to send a Dolphin to the line for a 1-and-1. He missed the front end and the Setters got the rebound.

Pace worked the ball around to Gilbertson on the right wing, where he attempted another off-balance three-pointer. This one didn't go in, but he drew a foul with 1.2 seconds left and went to the foul line for three attempts. He made the first two to put the Setters in front. Gilbertson was whistled for a lane violation on the third attempt as he tried to miss intentionally and grab his own rebound, but crossed the line too early.

After using its final timeout, Le Moyne's long-distance pass was knocked down to end the game.

Le Moyne (9-9, 5-6 NE10) wraps up its three-games-in-five-days homestand on Wednesday against The College of Saint Rose at 7:00 p.m.
