WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS 1-0 AT ASSUMPTION

Worcester, Mass. – The Le Moyne College women's soccer team fell 1-0 on the road to NE10 opponent Assumption University on Tuesday.

The Greyhounds scored the go-ahead goal towards the end of the first half, and although the Dolphins took 18 shots during the game, they were unable to find the back of the net.

Le Moyne senior goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) recorded a season-high 13 saves during the loss, including seven in the second half.

In the 3rd minute of the game Assumption senior forward Annie Irwin made a nice run up the right wing into the right side of the box and took an open shot about 10 yards from goal. Moreau was able to dive to her right and make her first save of the game.

Fifth year senior midfielder Lainey Foti (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) played a ball down the right wing for Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) in the 4th minute and the sophomore forward chased the ball down and earned Le Moyne their second corner kick of the game.

Le Moyne would go on to earn nine corner kicks throughout the 90 minutes compared to two for Assumption.

Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) drove the ball into the box from the right corner flag, and Reagan Sames (Rexford, N.Y./Shenendehowa) got a slight deflection of the ball as she was running towards the near post. Not much pace was taken off the ball as it continued towards the middle of the box. Foti showed great reflexes to adjust to the deflection and somehow redirect the ball towards the goal line. A group of players positioned in front of the goal stopped the ball, and an Assumption player tried to clear it. The attempted clearance hit directly off Foti, and the ball ricocheted back towards the top shelf of the goal. Assumption goalkeeper Julia Walsh jumped and tipped the ball up, and it bounced off the crossbar. Walsh then knocked the ball out of bounds for another corner kick.

The Greyhounds worked the ball up the field in the 25th minute, then Amaia Astiasaran sent a ball in the air towards the right side of Assumption's attacking third for Haleigh Ward. Ward sent a pass to Haley Brown near the middle-right side of Le Moyne's penalty area. Brown was defended well by Le Moyne center back Katelyn Courcy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) but she dropped off a nice pass to a cutting Astiasaran on her left, who took a one-touch shot with her right foot about 10 yards from the goal line.

Astiasaran put her shot low in the center of the goal frame. Moreau was moving to her right on the play, but she shifted back to her left on the shot, went to the ground and caught the ball cleanly to keep the game scoreless.

The Greyhounds broke the tie in the 41st minute when Haley Brown got free on the right wing and sent a cross on the ground into the middle of the box for Ashley Wenzel, who placed her one-touch shot with her right foot perfectly into the bottom left corner of the net, passed the diving Moreau, to give Assumption a 1-0 advantage.

The Dolphins had possession in the right side of their attacking third in the 49th minute, and Payton Khadra (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) bounced a pass to Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's) who was in the top right corner of the 18-yard box. LeBlanc brought the ball down and dropped off a pass for Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton).

Maxam took a touch then took a shot with her left foot about 25 yards from goal. Her shot was hit hard but right at Walsh, who caught the ball to put an end to Le Moyne's attack.

Maxam took another long shot from around the same spot with her right foot with just over 21 minutes remaining in the game. The freshman forward lifted the ball in the air towards the top left corner of the goal, and Walsh had to scramble backwards and jump to grab the shot and make the save.

With less than four minutes remaining in the game, Wilson got the ball in the right side of the Assumption penalty area and took a shot with her right foot, but it was blocked by a defender. Le Moyne retained possession and eventually Foti earned a corner kick for the 'Phins.

Unnarsdóttir took the corner kick, and drove the ball to the back post, not far off of the goal line.

The corner taken with Unnarsdóttir's right foot was hit with great pace and curling towards the top right corner of the net. At the last second Walsh left her feet and knocked the ball with her right hand away from her goal towards the right sideline.

Following the loss, the Dolphins fall to 3-6-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play with two games remaining on their regular season schedule.

The team will return home for a conference game against Adelphi University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
