WOMEN'S SOCCER RECORDS A 1-1 DRAW AGAINST ADELPHI

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's soccer team pulled out a 1-1 draw against one of the top teams in the Northeast-10 Conference on Saturday to add to their points in the conference standings.

Le Moyne celebrated Senior Day on Ted Grant Field before the game, with a special ceremony to honor three seniors: Allison Moreau, Elizabeth Western, and Reagan Sames.

"Today was a very important result, and a very important point. It's a point earned, not two points lost. Adelphi is a very good team; they are very organized, and they are very well coached. They are definitely one of the top three teams in the conference and one of the better teams in the country. They've been in and out of the national poll and were receiving votes in the national poll this week, and deservedly so, they are a quality side. Credit to our players, they left everything on the field today. At the beginning of the game, we had some momentum, but when you create the momentum, you aim to get something out of it. We did not capitalize on the momentum that we had in the beginning of the game, then the momentum shifted a little bit towards Adelphi. With some rotation and our substitution pattern we balanced the game off in the first half. Going into the second half, it came down to 45 minutes with the game tied and everything to play for. There were a couple of very good possession sequences that we created, we started getting into the dangerous spots on the field. Lainey Foti did a tremendous job drawing a foul at the top of the box, then Hildur [Unnarsdóttir] executed (the free kick) perfectly, it was a very good goal. It's always tough to give up the lead, but looking at the whole game, we think it was a fair result, and again, playing against such a quality team with so much to play for, a chance at the postseason, that was a remarkable character performance by the team. Now we are going to focus on our last regular season game at Pace. We have everything to play for. Yes, we would have liked to get three points out of this game and have full control of our destiny with regards to our postseason placement, but that point [that we earned today] might be crucial for us to get into the Notheast-10 Conference Championships. We will talk about starting the proper preparations for this game as soon as today. Proper recovery, hydration, sleep hours, and then a quick turnaround with two soccer days before going to Pace with everything to play for," said Le Moyne Head Coach Jaro Zawislan after the game.

The Adelphi University Panthers traveled to Syracuse with an 8-1-1 conference resume, but the Dolphins delivered an inspired performance with their playoff hopes on the line.

Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) put a shot on goal for Le Moyne in the first half, but the two teams were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.

While the Panthers have already clinched a top-three seed in the NE10 Championships, the team still had something to play for in their penultimate game of the regular season. Just two points behind the conference leader FPU in the standings, Adelphi was in great position to overtake first place, and set themselves up for a chance to win the conference regular season championship.

The action was intense, fast-paced and exciting to begin the second half, and in the 57th minute Lainey Foti (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) was fighting for possession just outside the Panthers' 18-yard box and was able to draw a foul, setting Le Moyne up for a free kick in a dangerous position on the field.

Le Moyne's leading scorer this season, Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) took the free kick in the middle-left portion of Le Moyne's attacking third.

Unnarsdóttir went for goal on the set piece with her right foot. The shot was hit over the wall and towards the top left portion of the net.

Adelphi goalkeeper Krista Aliscio dove high to her right and got a touch on the ball, but it continued across the goal line and bounced into the net to give the 'Phins a 1-0 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley) was excellent in goal during the match, recording seven saves and stifling many promising Adelphi attacking sequences.

The Panthers came into the match with the knowledge that a win would put them in first place in the NE10 Standings, so Adelphi was relentlessly pursuing the equalizing goal after conceding on the free kick.

Adelphi broke through in the 77th minute when Ashley Borriello played a great ball on the ground into the middle of the Le Moyne penalty area for the speedy Victoria Colatosti, who got in behind Le Moyne's defense, tracked the ball down about 12 yards away from the goal line, then finished with her left foot by lifting the ball over the oncoming Moreau and hitting the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The Dolphins were unable to take a shot during the final 12 minutes of the game, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Dolphins are now in a three-way tie for 8th place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings. Le Moyne, American International, and Southern New Hampshire each have 11 points in conference play, and each team has one game remaining on their regular season schedule.

The Le Moyne College women's soccer team will play their final game of the 2022 regular season on Wednesday at Pace University, with kick off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
