Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team earned an important and impressive 3-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory on Wednesday over #21 Adelphi University on Ted Grant Field to keep themselves in the conference postseason picture.
Le Moyne came out strong and opened a 3-0 first half lead on the Panthers, who were tied for 3
rd place in the conference standings when the match began.
"Absolutely a great performance from the boys. We're really proud of them, proud of the effort and the willingness to work and break (Adelphi) down. If we have those traits for the final two games [of the regular season], it's going to be a good thing for us," said Le Moyne Head Coach
Tom Bonus after the victory.
In the 10
th minute
Michael Lantry (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Syracuse/DePaul) played a ball in the air down the left wing for
Max Van Duin (Noordwijk, Netherlands/Teylingen College Leeuwenhorst/Free University of Amsterdam) who hit the ball out of the air and knocked it to
Jack Goodrich (Kelsall, England/King's School Chester) who made a nice dribbling run into the left side of Adelphi's penalty area.
Goodrich absorbed contact from an Adelphi defender, continued forward and then was tripped from behind, earning the 'Phins a PK.
Tom Henne (Hamburg, Germany) took the penalty kick for Le Moyne and put his shot on the ground straight down the middle into the net to score his second goal of the season and give the 'Phins a 1-0 advantage.
With 28:30 left in the first half Adelphi won back possession in their own half, but Le Moyne continued to apply pressure after turning the ball over.
Cameron Stuart (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley), Van Duin and
Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira) were sprinting after the ball when Stuart influenced a bad pass back to the goalkeeper. Adelphi's goalkeeper took a heavy touch upon receiving the pass, and Sperduto pounced on the ball. Sperduto won possession, turned his body to goal and shot the ball past the retreating goalkeeper and into the net to double Le Moyne's lead and record his first goal of the 2022 season.
The Dolphins received a free kick just outside the left side of Adelphi's penalty area, and they tried to take it quickly. Goodrich slipped a pass to a cutting
Brett Stern (Lockport, N.Y./Newfane/Duquesne), but Adelphi's Jesper Mikkelsen saw the play coming and shielded Stern from the ball.
Stuart blocked the clearance attempt, and the ball fell to Stern, who was standing just outside the left side of the penalty area. Stuart made an overlapping run to Stern's left, and Stern dropped him off a pass in Stuart's diagonal path towards the left post.
The extremely quick and technically gifted Stuart took a touch to evade the first Adelphi defender, then rolled the ball over with his left foot to evade a sliding help defender, took another small touch to get past the goalkeeper, then hit the ball into the net to record his team-best fifth goal of the season. The freshman forward leads the team in both goals and assists with five and four, respectively.
Freshman goalkeeper
Matthew Gera (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) made three saves in goal to record his second win in three games, along with his first career shutout victory.
The Le Moyne College men's soccer team now has 10 points in the NE10 Standings, which puts them in a tie for 8
th place with Bentley.
The Dolphins will stay in Syracuse for a match against Saint Anselm College on Saturday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m. on Ted Grant Field, then they will close out the regular season with a match at Assumption University on October 25.
