MAXAM'S FIRST GOAL AGAINST NEW HAVEN SELECTED AS LE MOYNE COLLEGE PLAY OF THE WEEK, PRESENTED BY SODEXO

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College Play of the Week, presented by Sodexo, for October 3 occurred during the women's soccer team's 2-0 road victory over University of New Haven on Saturday.

With just under 20 minutes left in the first half and the score still tied 0-0 the Dolphins were awarded a corner kick from the left flag. Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) took the kick for Le Moyne, and she drove her cross into the penalty area towards the edge of the six-yard box.

The ball flew over a cluster of players moving towards the near post and dove towards the turf in front of the right side of the net. Freshman forward Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) made her run towards the far post with a player marking her closely.

After reading the trajectory of Unnarsdóttir's cross, Maxam stopped her run and shifted to the left, which created some space from her defender.

With her body facing the left sideline Maxam was able to skillfully hit the ball out the air with the instep of her left foot and place her shot perfectly into the right side of the net, just inside the right post. Unnarsdóttir's cross was hit hard, providing Maxam's one-touch redirection onto goal with an amount of pace that when combined with Maxam's precision gave the New Haven goalkeeper no chance of preventing the goal.

Maxam went on to score her second goal of the game just two minutes later after a long free kick from Unnarsdóttir was knocked towards the edge of the six-yard box by Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's). Maxam was able to get behind the goalkeeper and hit the ball into the net to complete a first half brace and tally her third goal of the season.

The win against New Haven was the second in a row for the 'Phins and the third consecutive NE10 match during which they have recorded at least one point in the conference standings. Up next, the Dolphins will hit the road for an exciting non-conference matchup against #17 Mercy College.

The Mavericks are ranked 17th in the nation and second in the East Region with an 8-1-0 record so far in 2022.

Mercy, who competes in the East Coast Conference, lost to Franklin Pierce by a score of 1-0 in their season-opening match but followed that up with a 7-2 win against NE10 member Southern Connecticut State.

The Mavericks also recorded a 1-0 win against Adelphi University, who the Dolphins will face in NE10 play on October 22, as well as a 2-0 win over ECC opponent Daemen, who Le Moyne tied 0-0 during a non-conference match in August.
