Albany, N.Y. – Brandt Roundtree went coast-to-coast for a lay-up in the final six seconds to give Dominican University New York a 68-66 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the season-opener for both teams at the Saint Rose Tipoff Tournament at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Sophomore guard
Zy'Ever Wingfield (Richmond, Va./Henrico/Fork Union Military Academy) led the Dolphins in his first career start with career highs of 18 points, including 10 in the second half, and eight rebounds. In their Dolphin debuts, graduate student guard
Nate McClure (Houston, Texas/Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) recorded 13 points, including 10 in the second half. and seven rebounds and graduate student guard
Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) posted 12 points, including eight in the first half.
Wahaad Johnson led four Chargers in double figures with 15 points, including 11 in the second half. Joshuel White recorded a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Roundtree and Joshua Serrano each tallied 10 points.
The Dolphins, who played Dominican for just the second time in the program's 74-year history (1-1 now), jumped out to an 8-2 lead through the opening 3:12 and pushed the margin to 17-6 after 7:17 of play to force a Dominican timeout. Wingfield had six of the points in the span, while junior guard
Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) and Salter each nailed three-pointers.
After six points by the Chargers out of the timeout around another Salter three-pointer, Salter hit a jumper and McClure buried a three-pointer to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game with 9:31 left.
Following a pair of three-pointers by each of freshman
Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) and Joseph Merrill over the next 1:18, Dominican rattled off 14 of the next 18 points to cut its deficit to three with 1:45 remaining. Serrano had five points in the span, while Seth Sharif-Brown scored four, including a jumper with 1:45 to go.
Washington made a jumper and White connected on two free throws to deliver a 37-34 Le Moyne lead at halftime.
Johnson scored the first three points of the second half to even the score at 37 at the 18:11 mark.
Following four points from each team over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins got jumpers from junior forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) and Wingfield to push back out to a four-point advantage with 15 minutes left.
The Chargers answered with six straight points and 10 of the next 13 to go up 51-48 with 12:20 left. Johnson and Roundtree each had four points in the span and White had the first two.
After Wingfield scored five straight points around two Dominican free throws to tie the score, Dominican took its largest lead of the game with six consecutive points, including four from White and a Johnson jumper. 62-61
Le Moyne countered with a 9-2 jaunt to take the lead. McClure started the run with a three-pointer and followed with another one after Salter made a free throw. Mosquera then scored in transition to put the Dolphins up with 3:45 left.
Dominican took the lead back with the next five points. Serrano put the Chargers up with a three-pointer and Roundtree followed with a jumper with 1:52 left for a 66-62 lead.
McClure responded with a jumper of his own with 1:34 remaining to pull the Dolphins within 66-64. After the Dolphins got the ball back with 14 seconds left off a Dominican missed jumper, McClure drew a foul while attempting a go-ahead three-pointer with six seconds to play. He missed the first, but connected on the second and third to knot the score at 66.
Following a timeout by Dominican with six seconds left, Roundtree in-bounded the ball and immediately got it back. He then raced up court and was able to get to the basket for a lay-up for the win as time expired.
Le Moyne (0-1) continues its appearance at the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday against Bloomfield College at 2:00 p.m.
