Manchester, N.H. – The Le Moyne College women's basketball team completed their two-game road trip in New Hampshire with two NE10 Conference victories after taking down the Saint Anselm College Hawks by a score of 64-52 on Friday evening inside the Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Coming off a 77-57 NE10 road victory against the Franklin Pierce University Ravens on Wednesday, the Dolphins had little time to prepare for the Hawks and reigning NE10 Rookie of the Year Gabby Turco.
Le Moyne held a 46-44 lead over Saint Anselm after three quarters, then outscored the Hawks 18-8 during the final frame to claim their second consecutive double-digit conference victory.
"This is a tough place to play. Saint A's has got great players, and kudos to our team for locking in on defense and holding them to 52 points. That's just unbelievable, especially with one day in between to prepare (following the FPU game on Wednesday)." said Le Moyne Head Coach
Mary Grimes following the win.
Redshirt-sophomore forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) and senior guard
Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) both recorded a double-double for the Dolphins during the win on Friday, marking the fourth contest already this season that the pair has recorded a double-double during the same game.
Baker tallied her sixth double-double of the campaign by contributing 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in 40 minutes played, while Roberts poured in a game-high 17 points on 7-8 shooting from the field and 3-3 from the line to go along with 10 rebounds.
Baker currently leads the NE10 in rebounds per game.
Redshirt-freshman point guard
Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) played all 40 minutes for the 'Phins and finished the NE10 battle with a stat line of 10 points – all of which came in the second half – seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks, one steal and just one turnover.
First-year point guard
Kaia Goode (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) recorded six points, four assists and three steals in 28 minutes of action, while senior guard
Lexi Gruss (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) provided three steals, two assists, two rebounds and three points in 27 minutes played.
After recording a season-high three made three-point field goals during the NE10 win over FPU on Wednesday, freshman guard
Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) once again drained three triples on the road against the Hawks on Friday. Linnin shot 50% from deep inside Stoutenburgh Gymnasium and finished the contest with a season-high 11 points off the bench.
For the second straight game, Le Moyne's reserve players outscored the opponent's bench. This time around the Le Moyne bench tallied 16 points, while Saint Anselm received seven points from their reserve players. Freshman forward
Tamiya Turner (Howell, N.J./Howell) provided three fourth-quarter points for the 'Phins, while sophomore guard
Emily Florvil (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) recorded four rebounds, including two offensive boards, and a basket during seven minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Melanie Hoyt led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and a block. Senior guards Macy Spinks and McKenzy Ouellette each went 2-4 from three-point range on Friday, accounting for all four of Saint Anselm's made three-pointers against the Dolphins.
The Hawks shot 4-18 from deep against Le Moyne's active zone defense, while the 'Phins converted on 6 of their 16 three-point attempts.
Gabby Turco, who has been a high-volume scorer for the Hawks so far this season after claiming NE10 Rookie of the Year honors while playing alongside NE10 Player of the Year Peyton Steinman during the 2021-22 campaign, went scoreless against Le Moyne on Friday.
Turco finished the NE10 contest 0-11 from the field, but she still contributed three rebounds, four assists and one steal to the Saint Anselm cause.
"(Gabby Turco) is a great player, and we knew that coming in. She's just an All-Conference kid, so we really tried to lock in and limit her touches. She got into foul trouble early, which you know was fortunate for us. But kudos to the team, like I said, for locking in and understanding the assignment… (Turco) was everywhere. It wasn't just Haedyn (Roberts) stopping her, or (
Lytoya Baker) stopping her. (Turco) was at the top, she was in the corner, she was at the high post, she was everywhere. The team was just very, very aware of where she was…" said Le Moyne Head Coach
Mary Grimes after the game.
After recording 28 points off turnovers during their 20-point win at Franklin Pierce, the Dolphins scored 16 points off turnovers against the Hawks.
Saint Anselm held a 4-3 lead with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter when Goode swung the ball to Linnin in the left corner. Linnin let go of contested three-point field goal that hit nothing but net to put the 'Phins up 6-4.
With 28 seconds left in the opening quarter, Baker caught the ball on the right side of the floor following a Le Moyne baseline out of bounds play and gave her defender a pump fake. The 5'9" senior guard took two dribbles with her left hand to the middle of the paint then planted her feet, pivoted around her defender towards the right block and let go of a running layup that hit off the backboard and fell through the hoop, giving the 'Phins a 14-9 lead.
Saint Anselm came back quickly the other way. Spinks got all the way to the basket and scored a layup to make it a one-possession game, then Le Moyne moved the ball across half court with less than 10 seconds remaining in the quarter. Baker caught the ball at the top of the key, dribbled at her defender with an in-and-out right-handed dribble followed by a crossover to her left. A Saint Anselm help defender on the baseline stepped into Baker's path, leaving Florvil wide open in the short corner on the left side of the floor. Baker made the pass to Florvil, but her shot just before the buzzer went in and then out, concluding the first period with a 14-11 score in favor of the Dolphins.
Roberts scored the first three baskets of the second quarter.
The 6'1" forward caught a pass above the right block at the 9:13 mark, took a dribble towards her right shoulder then planted her right foot, pivoted across the body of her defender with the ball above her head, stepped towards the right side of the hoop, kept her body between the ball and her defender and finished a layup through contact.
Roberts grabbed a defensive rebound with 8:16 left in the second quarter, and during the subsequent Le Moyne possession she established great possession on the right block. Lusher threw the entry pass away from the defender, allowing Roberts to simply turn and score.
Le Moyne recorded another stop on defense with 7:39 remaining in the second quarter, then moved the ball beautifully for 20 seconds on offense, leading to an open corner three for Goode.
Goode's shot missed long, but Lusher grabbed a contested offensive rebound on the weak side and kicked the ball to Gruss on the left wing. Gruss quickly moved the ball to Roberts near the top of the key and she drilled the midrange jumper to put the Dolphins up 20-11 and force a Saint Anselm timeout.
Ouellette made both of her three-point field goals back-to-back during the middle of the second quarter. Her second triple trimmed Saint Anselm's deficit to 22-21.
Ouellette scored in the paint with 1:37 left in the half to tie the game at 23-23, but Linnin responded with a three for Le Moyne to put the Dolphins back in front, 26-23. Hoyt scored a layup with under 30 seconds left in the half to make it 26-25 after 20 minutes of action.
Lusher, who scored all 10 of her points against the Hawks during the second half, scored her first field goal of the game with 9:11 left in the third quarter.
Lusher jumped to catch a pass in the paint off a baseline out of bounds play, and her momentum was moving away from the basket. With a defender closely guarding, Lusher planted her feet, pivoted towards the basket and banked in a contested shot over her defender to make it 30-27 in favor of the Dolphins.
Following a three-pointer from Spinks and an old-fashioned three-point play from Hoyt, the Hawks held a 35-32 lead.
On another Le Moyne baseline out of bounds play, Roberts caught the ball above the left block, took a dribble into her defender and finished a very difficult shot in the paint to trim Le Moyne's deficit to one, then Linnin and Lusher hit back-to-back three-point field goals to put the 'Phins back in front, 40-35.
With 6:10 left in the fourth quarter, Roberts set a screen in the middle of the paint then sealed her defender inside the right block. Lusher threw a perfect entry pass from the right wing, out of the swatting Saint Anselm defender's reach. Roberts caught the pass and turned towards the rim with her defender now on her back. From under the rim Roberts was able to finish the layup through contact and draw a foul on the shot. She converted the additional free throw to put Le Moyne up 54-46.
Roberts, who recorded 11 second-half points for the Dolphins on Friday, displayed some impressive footwork on the baseline with 4:32 left in the contest, faking out her defender and finishing a reverse layup from the under the hoop to give the 'Phins a 56-46 advantage.
The 'Phins made five free throws down the stretch to put the game away.
The Dolphins now hold a 5-2 record, including a 3-1 resume against Northeast-10 Conference opponents.
The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will be back in action on Tuesday, December 6 when they host American International College for a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference matchup on Ted Grant Court.
