MEN’S BASKETBALL USES BENCH SUPPORT TO DOWN AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 80-57

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team got 44 points from its bench en route to an 80-57 victory over American International College on Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

"Another just great team win," said head coach Nate Champion '14. "I thought our depth kind of came in to play today. Our forwards really stepped up their play, with X (Xavier Wilson) leading us with 16, Armon (Nasseri) with 14 and Luke (Sutherland) with 13, just starting to see our depth show up in the forward position today. We really took care of the ball as well with only 10 turnovers. Last time we had 17 against them and I thought that was really the difference in the game."

Junior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) led three Dolphins in double figures with 16 points, including 12 in the second half on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Graduate student forward Armon Nasseri (Youngstown, Ohio/Spire Academy/Mercyhurst/Roberts Wesleyan) scored in double digits for the first time as a Dolphin with 14 points, including eight in the first half, to go with seven rebounds. Third-year sophomore forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) posted 13 points off the bench, including nine in the opening half.

Xion Golding led the Yellow Jackets in the loss with 14 points and six rebounds. Frankyn Batista turned in 13 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 10-2 lead through the opening 3:04. Redshirt freshman guard Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School) and third-year sophomore guard Jeremiah Washington (Chicago, Ill./Bogan/Ferris State) drilled three-pointers around a pair of jumpers in the paint by redshirt freshman guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton School).

The Yellow Jackets answered with 10 of the next 13 points to pull within one with 13:01 left. Walter Covington and Joshua Lopes hit three-pointers and Batista and Carlos Hubb made shots in the paint.

Following back-and-forth action over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins ran off a 15-2 streak to open up a 30-16 lead with 6:48 to go. Sutherland started the run with a three-pointer and a lay-up and capped it with a thunderous dunk, while Nasseri and senior guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) each had four points in the span.

After the teams traded points over the next five minutes, the Yellow Jackets closed out the half with seven of the last nine points to get within 38-28 at halftime. Buke Peikrishvili made a three-pointer and then Batista and Golding each scored two points.

The Dolphins opened the second half with the first five points on a lay-up by Nasseri and a three-pointer by Washington.

Following back-and-forth play over the next four minutes, AIC scored seven straight points to cut its deficit to 50-44 with 12:43 remaining. Batista had a put-back lay-up, Golding made two free throws and then Peikrishvili drilled a three-pointer.

The Dolphins countered with the next seven points to regain control of the game. Senior guard Payton Hudson (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Saviour Lutheran/Iona/Independence C.C.) recorded a conventional three-point play and hit a jumper around a jump shot by Sutherland.

After the teams alternated baskets for three minutes, the Dolphins ran off 10 straight points to take a 20-point advantage. Wilson, Hudson, Nasseri, Davis and Constant each accounted for two points in the streak.

The teams exchanged points over the final six minutes of the game.

Le Moyne (12-12, 8-9 NE10) returns to action on Friday at Franklin Pierce University at 6:00 p.m.
