MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS REGULAR-SEASON FINALE AT PACE, 73-64

Pleasantville, N.Y. – Twins Brandon and Bryan Powell combined for 31 points to lead Pace University to a 73-64 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale on Tuesday evening at the Goldstein Athletics Center.

The Dolphins finish the regular season in fifth place in the Southwest Division with an 8-11 record. The Dolphins will open NE10 Championship play on Friday at Stonehill College, the fourth seed in the Northeast Division, at 7:30 p.m.

The Dolphins had four players finish in double figures, led by redshirt freshman guard Kevin Constant (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic/Tilton), who had 15 points to go wit four rebounds and two steals. Third-year sophomore forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) posted 12 points. Graduate student forward Armon Nasseri (Youngstown, Ohio/Spire Academy/Mercyhurst/Roberts Wesleyan) and senior guard Nino Hernandez (Gardner, Mass./The Winchendon School/Bryant) each tallied 10 points, while Nasseri grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and dished out three assists.

Brandon Powell led the Setters in the victory with 16 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists. Bryan Powell and Dominick Cristiano each scored 15 points, while Powell pulled down nine rebounds. Austin Gilbertson was the fourth Pace player in double digits with 10 pioints.

After the teams went back and forth over the opening seven minutes of the game, at which point the Setters led 12-11, Pace went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to open up a double-digit lead. Brandon Powell started the run with a basket, Cristiano scored four points, Jordan Fox drained a three-pointer and then the Gilbertson scored the final five points for an 11-point edge.

Following three minutes of play in which each team scored just two points, the Dolphins scored 11 of the next 15 points to trim their deficit to just four at halftime, 31-27. Sutherland and Hernandez bookended the streak with three-pointers, while Constant scored in the paint and Nasseri had a conventional three-point play.

Le Moyne scored the first five points of the second half to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game. Constant scored all five points with a jumper and then a three-point play.

Pace answered back with 10 straight points to regain control of the game. Marc Dadika and Gilbertson started the streak with back-to-back three-pointers, Brandon Powell scored twice in the paint.

Following a free throw by the Dolphins to interrupt the run by the Setters, Brandon Jacobs made a free throw and a three-pointer, Cristiano converted a lay-up and Bryan Powell made a lay-up for a 16-point advantage with 12:15 to play.

Pace pushed its lead to 17 on a pair of occasions before the Dolphins charged back. Le Moyne used a 21-6 run to close within two with four and one-half minutes left. Five Dolphins scored in the spurt, led by seven from Sutherland and six for redshirt freshman guard Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School).

The Setters responded with five straight points to take back control of the game. Brandon Powell made two free throws and then Cristiano made a three-pointer from the right corner. After almost two minutes of action in which there was one point scored by the Dolphins, Cristiano had a dunk on a fast break and Bryan Powell made a three-pointer to put Pace up 70-59.

The Dolphins got within eight in the final minute, but could not get any closer before time ran out.
