MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT NEW HAVEN, 80-74

West Haven, Conn. – Antonio Lopez and Quashawn Lane scored 13 points each to lead the University of New Haven to an 80-74 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium.

Redshirt freshman guard Christian Davis (Denver, Colo./Mullen/New Hampton School) led the Dolphins in the setback with 18 points, including 10 in the second half, while grabbing nine rebounds. Senior guard Payton Hudson (Yonkers, N.Y./Our Saviour Lutheran/Iona/Independence C.C.) scored 10 of his season-high 13 points in the second half, while junior forward Xavier Wilson (Spring Valley, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac/The Hotchkiss School/Central Connecticut State) had eight of his 10 points after halftime.

Lopez and Lane each tallied nine of their 13 points in the second half, while Lane dished out four assists and posted two steals. Davontrey Thomas turned in 12 points and seven rebounds, while Tavin Pierre Philippe netted 11 points.

The Dolphins scored the first four points of the game and pushed out to their largest lead of the game at 15-8 with 13:04 left in the first half. Senior forward Nicholas Johnson (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy/Frostburg St./Montgomery College) had six of the points in the span and Davis scored five.

After the teams went back and forth over the next five minutes, which resulted in the Dolphins holding a 24-18 lead with 8:21 left, the Chargers scored 10 of the next 12 points to take their first lead of the game. Thomas and Nick Crocker each hit three-pointers and Lane and Pierre Philippe made jumpers.

Le Moyne took the lead back with a fast-break lay-up by graduate student forward Armon Nasseri (Youngstown, Ohio/Spire Academy/Mercyhurst/Roberts Wesleyan) and a three-pointer by Davis for a 31-28 lead with 2:07 until halftime.

New Haven scored the final eight points of the half to take a 36-31 lead into intermission. Lopez made a lay-up and then Thomas and Pierre Philippe drained three-pointers.

Following 10 points by each team over the first 5:20 of the second half, the Chargers scored seven points in a row to take a 12-point advantage. Lopez drilled a three-pointer, Lane made a lay-up and then Sean Smith converted a pair of foul shots for a 53-41 lead with 12:49 to go.

The teams then went back and forth over the next five and one-half minutes with New Haven's lead bouncing between six and 11 points and settling at nine with 7:21 to play.

The Dolphins followed with five straight points to get within four at 65-61 with 6:01 left. Wilson had a dunk and then Davis recorded a conventional three-point play.

After Hudson answered a Lopez jumper with two free throws to get the Dolphins within four for the final time with 4:34 remaining, the Chargers scored eight of the next 10 points to push their lead back to double digits with 2:07 left. Lane bookended the spurt with a lay-up and a jumper.

Hudson drained a pair of three-pointers in the final minute to get the Dolphins within five, but the Chargers made enough free throws down the stretch to hold onto the lead.

Le Moyne (9-11, 5-8 NE10), which has lost three conference games in a row for the first time since February 2016, is back in action on Tuesday at Southwest Division-leading Adelphi University at 7:30 p.m.
