MARSHALL THROWS COMPLETE-GAME SHUTOUT AS BASEBALL SPLITS SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER WITH NEW HAVEN

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team split their Sunday afternoon Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against the University of New Haven Chargers on Dick Rockwell Field.

New Haven claimed a 3-2 victory during the first half of the doubleheader behind a strong game at the plate from junior outfielder Robert Taylor, who went 4-4, hit two homeruns, scored all three of his team's runs, and recorded both of his team's RBIs.

Junior right-handed starting pitcher Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) delivered a gem on the mound during game two and led Le Moyne to a 1-0 win.

Marshall allowed just two hits and recorded 10 strikeouts during the complete-game shutout.

"We got some very good pitching performances today, capped off by Jake Marshall's two-hit gem and a clutch RBI single from Mike Smith. It was a great bounce back win and will give us some momentum going into tomorrow's doubleheader," said Le Moyne Head Coach Scott Cassidy '98 after today's games.

Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) went 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base during the game two victory, while Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) went 2-3 and provided the go-ahead RBI during the conference win.

Smith went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored during game one, while Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) went 2-3 with a run scored, an RBI, a double and a walk during the 3-2 loss.

Sophomore left-handed starting pitcher Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded two strikeouts to begin game one, then Taylor hit a two-out solo homerun during the top of the 1st to give the Chargers an early 1-0 lead.

Hansen drew a one-out walk to give Le Moyne a baserunner in the bottom of the third, then Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) drove a low two-strike pitch back up the middle to put runners on first and second.

Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) drew a walk to load the bases, then Carroll drew an RBI walk to tie the game at 1-1. New Haven starting pitcher Thomas Eletto settled in and recorded two strikeouts to end the inning without sustaining further damage.

Taylor hit a double down the right field line during the top of the 6th, then tagged up and took third base on a deep fly ball, and came home to score after a throwing error on the relay.

Smith hit a one-out single for Le Moyne during the bottom of the 6th, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch.

Hansen ripped a single into left field that drove in Smith and tied the game at 2-2.

Taylor hit his second solo homerun of the day to lead off the top of the 8th inning, giving the Chargers a 3-2 lead.

Smith led off the bottom of the 9th with a single into left field, then Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) moved the runner over with a sacrifice bunt.

New Haven relief pitcher Drew Silverman recorded a strikeout and got a ground ball to end the game and earn the pitching decision win.

In game number two, the Dolphins threatened to score during the bottom of the 1st inning.

Carroll hit a one-out single into right field, then stole second during the next at-bat.

Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) and Hansen drew back-to-back two-out walks to load the bases, which brought Smith to the plate.

Smith pulled a hard ground ball down the first base line, but the New Haven corner infielder moved his feet, went to his knees to block the ball, got up and stepped on first base himself to end the inning and prevent a run from scoring.

Marshall looked comfortable on the mound from the start, and the 6'6" righty recorded seven strikeouts through the first four innings.

Carroll hit a ground ball to the shortstop to lead off the bottom of the 5th inning, hustled down the line and beat the throw to the bag for a base hit.

Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Carroll into scoring position, then Carroll tagged up and advanced to third base following a Syta deep fly ball to center field.

Hansen drew a walk, then with two-outs and runners on the corners, Smith ripped a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Carroll and give the 'Phins a 1-0 advantage.

Marshall stoked Le Moyne's momentum with his third 1-2-3 inning of the game in the top of the 6th.

Marshall allowed a one-out walk in the top of the 7th, then recorded two consecutive ground balls to end the game and complete the shutout victory.

The Dolphins and the Chargers will play another doubleheader on Dick Rockwell Field on Monday afternoon. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. EST.
