BASEBALL WINS BOTH GAMES OF FRIDAY DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of their Friday afternoon Northeast-10 Southwest Division doubleheader on Dick Rockwell Field against the visiting Yellow Jackets of American International College.

The Dolphins have now won five games in a row, and 11 of their last 13 contests. Le Moyne is now 7-2 in NE10 Conference play.

Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) went eight innings strong during the nine-inning game one contest, and the 'Phins hit six doubles on their way to an 8-2 victory.

Senior second baseman Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) went 3-5 at the plate with three runs scored, an RBI, two doubles and a solo homerun during the game one win. Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) also recorded three hits; Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) and Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) each provided two hits during the victory.

6'6" junior right-handed starting pitcher Jacob Marshall (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) delivered his second consecutive seven-inning complete-game shutout to lead the 'Phins to a 1-0 win during the second half of the doubleheader.

During his last two starts, Marshall has allowed just five hits in 14.0 innings of work.

Marshall recorded a career-high tying 11 strikeouts during his outing on Friday, which is the third consecutive appearance during which he has recorded at least 10 strikeouts. He has recorded at least 10 strikeouts during five of his nine total appearances this season.

Miller drove in the go-ahead run during game two with a base hit through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the 2nd.

During game one, the Dolphins jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning.

Carroll hit a one-out solo homerun during Le Moyne's second at-bat of the day, then with the bases cleared Nevins pulled the ball into right field for a single. Syta also hit a single into right field during the next at-bat, then Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) advanced both runners with a ground ball.

Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) drove in both runners with a single into left field. Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) ripped a single into right field, then following a wild pitch and a series of errors by the AIC infield, Smith crossed the plate to make it 4-0. Miller smashed an RBI double into right field to give Le Moyne their final run of the inning.

A Carroll double, followed by a Nevins single and a wild pitch during Syta's at-bat put Le Moyne up 6-0 in the bottom of the 2nd.

The Yellow Jackets scored a run during the top of the 3rd on a solo homerun, but Le Moyne got it back in the bottom of the inning.

Carroll hit his second double of the game down the left field line, then Nevins drove him in with a base hit into right center field.

Sophomore right-hander Matt Tarby (Liverpool, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) pitched the top of the 9th for Le Moyne, during which he did not allow a run and struck out two batters to close the game and secure the win for the 'Phins.

Hansen led off the bottom of the 2nd inning for Le Moyne during game two of the doubleheader with a base hit into left field. A Mike Smith ground ball to the right side moved Hansen into scoring position, and a Drew Fureno bunt single put runners on first and third.

With one out, Miller singled through the right side to drive in Hansen and put the 'Phins up 1-0.

Marshall did not allow a single American International runner in scoring position during the seven-inning contest.

After allowing a leadoff base hit in the top of the 2nd, he got a ground ball that Carroll, Nevins and Syta rolled into a 4-6-3 double play to clear the bases.

In the top of the 3rd, Marshall allowed a two-out single, then struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Marshall allowed a base hit to lead off the top of the 5th, then recorded back-to-back strikeouts. With two outs, the runner tried to steal second, but Drew Fureno threw the runner out to end the inning.

Marshall recorded 1-2-3 innings during the top of the 6th and the top of the 7th to put the game away.

The Dolphins and the Yellow Jackets are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Saturday, with game one's first pitch slated for 1:00 p.m. EST.
