BASEBALL CLAIMS SERIES WIN OVER AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won their sixth game in a row Saturday afternoon on Dick Rockwell Field, a 16-5 victory over American International College which improved their Northeast-10 Conference record to 8-2.

The two sides played a doubleheader on Friday, and Le Moyne won both games. The Dolphins and the Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play another doubleheader on Saturday, but after the first game of the afternoon, a seven-inning contest, took three hours to complete, the teams postponed the final game of the weekend series due to concerns that imminent darkness would prevent them from completing the second half of the doubleheader.

Saturday's win over the Yellow Jackets was the sixth time this year that the Dolphins have scored at least 16 runs in a winning effort.

Joe Vail (Cromwell, C.T./Xavier) got the ball for game three of the weekend series, and completed 3.2 innings of work.

Jed Boyle (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) did not allow a hit during 1.1 innings in relief and was awarded the pitching decision win. Ryan DuBord (Old Saybrook, C.T./Old Saybrook) and Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) each pitched an inning to close out the game for the 'Phins.

Each player in the Le Moyne lineup reached base at least once, and six different players recorded at least two hits during the victory.

Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) went 2-4 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI.

Ty Syta (Hamburg, N.Y./St. Francis) went 3-4 with a walk, four runs scored and a game-high five RBI, including a grand-slam homerun in the bottom of the 4th inning.

Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) reached base five times on Saturday. Hansen was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI.

Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) went 2-3 with two walks and a three-run homerun.

Syta and Smith each have a team-high seven homeruns on the season so far.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning when Kiernan Caffrey hit a solo homerun over the right field fence, but Le Moyne tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Syta hit a leadoff single through the right side of the infield, then Hansen smashed a double into the left-center field gap to put runners on second and third with zero outs.

Smith drew a walk to load the bases, then Drew Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) hit a ground ball to the shortstop which drove in Syta from third.

On a damp and cold day, Vail struggled to throw strikes in the top of the 3rd, and the Yellow Jackets capitalized on some free bases and wild pitches to take a 3-1 lead.
The Dolphins scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) hit a one-out single to left field to give the 'Phins their first baserunner of the 3rd inning, then Brush advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored after Carroll drove the ball into the right-center field gap for an RBI double.

Carroll got a good jump at second base and advanced to third on a ball in the dirt, then with two outs in the inning Syta ripped an RBI double down the right field line. Syta advanced to third on a ball in the dirt, then Hansen drew a walk to put runners on first and third.

With two outs, Smith launched his seventh homerun of the season over the right field fence to give Le Moyne a 6-3 lead.

The Dolphins put up another five runs during the bottom of the 4th inning.

Brush drew a leadoff walk, then Carroll was hit by a pitch. Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) laid down a bunt single to load the bases with zero outs.

Le Moyne's cleanup hitter Syta stepped to the plate next and he pulverized an absolute no-doubter over the right field fence for a grand slam homerun to put the Dolphins up 10-3. Syta knew the ball was gone the moment he finished his swing, pausing to admire the trajectory of the ball before beginning his homerun trot.

With the bases cleared and still nobody out in the bottom of the 4th inning, Hansen singled into right-center field, and Smith followed that up with a walk.

Drew Fureno singled through the left side of the infield, which brought Hansen around to score from second, extending Le Moyne's lead to 11-3.

Each team scored a run during the 5th inning (A Nevins double followed by a Hansen single through the left side gave Le Moyne their twelfth run of the game in the bottom half) then the Yellow Jackets scored their final run of the game during the top of the 6th.

Derrick Miller (Westernville, N.Y./Rome Free Academy/Hudson Valley C.C.) led off the bottom of the 6th for Le Moyne with a single into right field, then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt.

Brush drew a walk, then Carroll poked a single into right field which drove in Miller.

A throwing error following a fielder's choice play allowed Brush to score, then Hansen came up with another base hit, an RBI single to left field which drove in Stya.

Smith came to the plate next and doubled to left center, and Hansen stopped at third base.

Drew Fureno drew a walk to load the bases, then Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 16-5 in favor of the 'Phins.

Patchett allowed a leadoff walk to lead off the top of the 7th, then he recorded a strikeout and got a ground ball which Carroll, Nevins and Syta rolled into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and complete the conference victory.

The Le Moyne College baseball team will next travel to New Haven, Connecticut on Tuesday to take on the Owls in a make-up game from the four-game series on April 2-3 during which game four was suspended in the 3rd inning due to rain. Tuesday's contest will be nine innings.
