Worcester, Mass. – The Le Moyne College baseball team lost two nine-inning contests on Thursday and have been eliminated from the 2022 NE10 Championship.
The Dolphins fell to the #8 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire University Penmen in their first game of the afternoon by a score of 7-0, then they had to turn around and immediately get ready for an elimination battle against Assumption University, who lost the first game of Championship weekend on Thursday morning to Adelphi.
During the evening battle against the Greyhounds, Assumption came away with a 4-0 win to stay alive in the conference postseason.
Sophomore left-handed starting pitcher
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) allowed four earned runs in 7.0 innings of work against the #1 seeded Penmen, but SNHU graduate right-hander and 2022 NE10 First Team All-Conference selection Josh Roberge allowed just six hits, one walk and zero runs while striking out eight hitters during 9.0 innings of work to earn the complete-game shutout victory.
Senior shortstop
Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) recorded a team-high two hits during the loss.
Southern New Hampshire University redshirt-sophomore catcher Nick Schwartz went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior first baseman Sam Henrie went 3-5 with a home run and two RBIs for the Penmen while senior designated hitter Dakota Mulcay launched a double and finished the contest with two RBIs.
Graduate left-hander
Joe Vail (Cromwell, Conn./Xavier) got the ball to start the win or go home matchup against Assumption and allowed just two earned runs in 6.1 innings of work, however Assumption junior left-handed starting pitcher Shea Ryan delivered a complete-game no-hit gem to leads the Greyhounds to a 4-0 victory. The loss to Assumption marks the first time that the Dolphins have been on the losing side of a no-hit performance since the 1990's. Ryan walked four batters during his fifth pitching decision victory of the season, and he recorded three strikeouts.
Assumption senior first baseman Nick Gaglioti went 2-4 and provided a team-high two RBIs against the Dolphins.
The Penmen jumped on the Dolphins in the afternoon game and established a 3-0 lead at the end of the 1
st inning following a leadoff walk, a base hit, an RBI ground ball out from Henrie, an RBI single through the right side from Schwartz, and then an RBI double from Mulcay.
Parker settled in for the 'Phins and did not allow a run during the next three frames.
Senior second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) and graduate right fielder
Michael Smith (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) hit back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the 1
st inning to put a runner in scoring position for Le Moyne, but Roberge recorded two consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.
In the top of the 3
rd inning, junior center fielder
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) led off with a hard-hit fly ball that was caught on the warning track in center fielder for the first out of the inning. After a Carroll pop up, Le Moyne's three-hitter Smith swung at the first pitch he saw and hit a rope towards the left-center field gap. Southern New Hampshire center fielder Idelson Taveras read the ball off the bat well, came charging in on a diagonal path and made an excellent diving catch in the gap to end the inning and rob Smith of a potential extra-base hit.
With one out and nobody on base in the top of the 5
th inning, Freshman first baseman
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) hit a hard line drive into center field for a base hit. Taveras bobbled the ball in center field, and Patchett showed some heads up base running by sprinting to second base and successfully putting himself in scoring position.
Brush came up next and hit a hard ground ball to the first baseman. Henrie fielded it cleanly and tossed it to Roberge who sprinted over to cover the bag for out number two, but the ground ball successfully moved Patchett over to third base. Roberge got an infield pop up during the next at-bat to end the inning and keep his shutout alive.
Henrie hammered a solo home run over the right field fence with two outs in the bottom of the 5
th to extend his team's lead to 4-0, then SNHU scored again later in the inning off an error to make it 5-0.
Le Moyne was unable to put a runner in scoring position during the 6
th, 7
th, or 8
th innings, then Southern New Hampshire added two more runs in the bottom of the 8
th to give themselves a 7-0 advantage.
Nevins singled and
Nick Hansen (Troy, N.Y./La Salle Institute/Hudson Valley C.C.) drew a walk with one out in the top of the 9
th, but Le Moyne was unable to get in the scoring column, and SNHU claimed the 7-0 win.
During game two against the Greyhounds, Le Moyne fell into a 2-0 deficit after Gaglioti ripped a two-RBI double in the top of the 2
nd.
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Brush drew consecutive two-out walks to put runners on first and second in the bottom of the 3
rd inning against Ryan, but the junior left-hander got an infield lineout during the next at-bat to end the inning and keep the 'Phins scoreless.
Sophomore left fielder
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) reached on an error with out in the bottom of the 5
th, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch with two outs.
During the next at-bat, Ryan got a foul fly ball out to end the inning and strand Boule at second.
Assumption scored a run during the top of the 7
th to extend their lead to 3-0, then scored again in the 8
th to make it a four-run game.
Ryan delivered 1-2-3 innings during the bottom of the 8
th and 9
th to complete his no-hitter and secure the 4-0 win for the Greyhounds.
Le Moyne was ranked 7
th in the most recent East Region Rankings, so the Dolphins will have to wait and see if they will receive a spot in the 2022 NCAA Championship.
