Nicholas Bove (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) will participate in this week's United States Amateur Championship, as announced by the United States Golf Association.
The championship, which is the USGA's oldest championship and was first held in 1895, will be played at The Ridgewood Country Club and the Arcola Country Club, both of which are Paramus, New Jersey, from August 15-21. The 36-hole stroke play portion of the championship will be played on Monday, August 15 and Tuesday, August 16 on the Ridgewood and Arcola Courses. Following stroke play, the field of 312 competitors will be trimmed to the top 64 scores for the Championship rounds. If needed, a playoff will be conducted to get the draw to exactly 64 golfers. The 32-match first round will be played on Wednesday, while the 16-match second round and eight-match third round will be played on Thursday and the four quarterfinal matches will be held on Friday. The two semifinal matches will be played on Saturday and the 36-hole championship final will be played on Sunday.
Coverage of the first four Championship rounds will air on the Peacock streaming service and the Golf Channel, while Saturday's semifinal matches (3:00 to 6:00 p.m.) and Sunday's match (from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.) will be aired on the Golf Channel.
The winner of the championship round will receive a gold medal and custody of the Havemeyer Trophy for one year. Both participants of the championship round will earn exemptions into the 2023 U.S. Open and a likely invitation to the 2023 Masters Tournament, while the champion will also receive an exemption into the 2023 British Open Championship.
Bove, who has registered a scoring average of 75.6 over 49 career rounds as a Dolphin and has finished in the top-10 at 10 of 23 events, participated in the qualifying event held on July 7 at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville, N.Y. Bove shot a 10-under par 134 to place first among the 54 competitors and claim the first automatic qualifying spot. He opened the qualifier with a nine-under par round of 63, which included 10 birdies, and then recorded a one-under score of 71 in the second round to top the field.
As a junior, Bove earned his third consecutive Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division II PING All-Region and Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference honors after recording a 75.9 scoring average over 23 rounds at 10 events. He finished in the top-10 at three events and was in the top-20 at six events. He opened the year by tying for 10th place at the Penmen Fall Invitational with three straight rounds of 73. His best performance of the year came at the NCAA Championships Atlantic/East Regional, where he tied for eighth place in the field of 108 competitors with a four-over score of 220 over the three rounds. He opened with a one-under 71 to land in a five-way tie for sixth place and then was in a tie for fifth place after a 73 in the second round.
