AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL CLAIMS 1-0 WIN OVER WOMEN'S SOCCER

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's soccer team lost a tightly contested 1-0 match to Northeast-10 Conference opponent American International College on Tuesday evening on Ted Grant Field. The Dolphins hit the crossbar during the first half, but it was the Yellow Jackets who held a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Le Moyne out-shot AIC 12-3 during the second half and looked like the better side for most of the final 45 minutes, but they were unable to find the equalizer and eventually lost their second match of the season.

"This result definitely hurts. When you create more chances than the other team, when you out-possess the other team, when you out-shoot the other team and you feel like you've done enough to at least come out with a tie, if not a win, that definitely hurts in the sense of not getting our result out of today's game. Again we did very good on the defensive side of the ball, minimizing any type of great opportunities for the other team. We created quality chances and it's definitely disappointing that we did not come out with at least a tie. Credit to AIC, they did what they had to do to come away with the result on the road. Their goalkeeper made a couple very good saves. We were much better today in possession in attack, it just came down to the final finishing touch. We just have to continue to keep improving with our finishing. We would worry if we weren't creating chances during the games, but we actually created quality chances, some of them glorious chances, we just didn't put them away. That's all it's going to come down to – can we finish the chances that we are now creating. We have a quick turnaround again. One day to look at this game and use this game to improve within the next two soccer days, and then focus on the next game," said Le Moyne Interim Head Coach Jaro Zawislan following the game.

With 38:45 remaining in the first half, Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) got the ball on the right wing and sent a dangerous cross into the box, but the ball skipped across the penalty area and was cleared away by an AIC defender.

In the 12th minute of the game Le Moyne winger Lindsey LeBlanc (Westminster, Mass./St. Bernard's) was fouled on the left wing within Le Moyne's attacking third. Hildur Unnarsdóttir (Kópavogur, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) took the set piece, which was placed about 12 yards away from the goal line.

Unnarsdóttir took a shot with her right foot and the ball rattled the crossbar near the top left corner of the goal and bounced back into the middle of the penalty area. AIC was unable to clear the ball out of their defensive third, and Lara Lobe (Trebnje, Slovenia/Gymnasium Buckhorn) won possession back for the Dolphins. Lobe sent a pass to Marissa Lisikatos (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane), who passed the ball to the feet of Magda Aspholm (Östersund, Sweden/Jämtlands Gymnasium Wargentin) in the middle of the field, about 25 yards from goal. Aspholm found Avery Maxam (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) at the top of the 18-yard box, and Maxam slipped a nice pass to Lainey Foti (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) who came from the right side and made a vertical run down the middle of the penalty area. American International goalkeeper Olivia Sousa came off her line and dove on the ball before Foti could get a touch on it.

30 seconds later LeBlanc got on the ball within the left side of the AIC penalty area and took a shot with her left foot that flew wide of the left post and out of bounds for a goal kick.

In the 31st minute of the first half Trystin Burger took a corner kick for the Yellow Jackets and sent a cross into the middle of the penalty area. There was a lot of contact in the middle of the box, and Burger's corner kick bounced off a Le Moyne player and flew into the back of the net to put American International up 1-0.

The Dolphins increased their level of play during the second half and created quality scoring chances throughout the final 45 minutes.

Five minutes into the second half, Wilson chased a throw in down the right wing and made a nice move to get away from her defender and serve the ball into the box. Maxam got a head on Wilson's cross, but the ball was cleared out of the box by an AIC defender. Aspholm received the loose ball at the top of the box, took a touch towards goal and ripped a shot with her right foot that bounced wide of the left post.

With 35:45 remaining in the contest Unnarsdóttir took a Le Moyne corner kick from the left flag and sent her cross over the crowd of players in the box towards the far post. Aspholm made her run towards goal and was able to get a head on the cross, but her shot bounced to the right of the goal post.

The Dolphins created a great scoring opportunity in the 57th minute following an AIC throw near midfield.

Maxam got the ball and evaded two different AIC players as she dribbled into Le Moyne's attacking third. Just as an AIC defender lunged at Maxam the freshman forward poked a pass to her left into the path of LeBlanc who was running down the left wing.

LeBlanc dribbled in the left side of the penalty area with Wilson at the back post, Maxam running diagonally towards goal to her right, and Foti standing near the top of the 18-yard box.

Just before a defender got to her at the edge of the six-yard box, LeBlanc hit a pass with her right foot, intended for Maxam.

Maxam couldn't get a touch on the pass, and the ball bounced to the right side of the penalty area. Foti moved laterally to get to the ball and took a shot with her first touch. As she was moving away from goal Foti sent her shot on target towards the near post. Sousa fell to the ground as she blocked the shot with both hands and deflected it out of bounds for a corner kick.

With 27 minutes remaining Maxam sent a nice pass on the ground to Foti, who received the ball in the center-left portion of the field near the top of the 18-yard box.

Foti faced up her defender, dribbled into the penalty area, made a move to her left and hit a shot with her left foot that was on target. Sousa was standing at the near post and made a great save, diving to her right and deflecting the ball away from goal to keep the Dolphins scoreless.

In the 77th minute Rylee Alston (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) made a run into the left side of Le Moyne's attacking third before sending a pass on the ground ahead to Foti. Foti received the ball in the center-left portion of the field, a few yards away from the top of the AIC penalty area with her back to goal and a defender on both sides of her. She bounced out away from pressure, turned towards goal and delivered a beautiful pass in the air across the box over a leaping defender to Wilson who made a run to the far post. Wilson brought the ball down about eight yards from goal, but before she could get a shot off the AIC defender recovered and knocked the ball out of bounds for a corner kick.

Unnarsdóttir took the ensuing corner kick and sent the ball into the middle of the penalty area. The ball fell in the middle of the box and was kicked away by an AIC defender. The attempted clearance went right to Lisikatos, who was standing in the box about 14 yards from goal. Lisikatos' first touch was a shot that she hit hard on the ground with her right foot. The shot was on target, but it was blocked by an American International defender.

With 8:40 left in the contest a pass was sent across midfield to Maxam, who shielded the ball from a contesting defender who tried to intercept the pass and continued moving with the ball towards the right side of the field. Maxam poked the ball away from an oncoming defender, then sent a pass down the right wing into the path of Wilson. Wilson dribbled with pace diagonally towards the goal, and just before she reached the penalty area, she took a shot with her right foot that bounced wide of the right post and out of bounds.

The Le Moyne College women's soccer team now holds a 2-2-1 record and will return to action on September 17 when they travel to Saint Anselm College for a 12:00 p.m. match against the Hawks.
