MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS ST. BONAVENTURE AND NIAGARA

Olean, N.Y. – Graduate student Alvaro Nunez (Jerez De La Frontera, Spain/Southwest Baptist) was part of four victories to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team to a sweep of St. Bonaventure University and Niagara University on Saturday at the SBU Tennis Courts. The Dolphins recorded 4-3 victories against both the Bonnies and Purple Eagles.

"Great day at Bonaventure with the men," said head coach Jeff Lonczak '03. "In our first match, we dropped the doubles point close at 2 and 3, but were able to overcome that setback. Luka set the tone with a tough victory at 1 over a solid player. Against Niagara, we played better doubles and won that point. Xavier clinched things for us at 5 with a focused effort over a solid player."

In the first match of the day, St. Bonaventure claimed the point in the doubles competition. At the second spot, Connor Turner and Jean Marrero posted a 6-3 win over graduate students Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense). Norka Sanchez and Anargha Ganguly clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at the third position over graduate student Luka Stojanovic (Paracin, Serbia/Kosta Cukic/University of Incarnate Word/Lipscomb) and junior Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College). Nunez teamed with classmate Leon Grundstroem (Hoganas, Sweden/Northwood) for a 7-6 win at the first position for Hugo Cochlin and Rasmus Egehus.

Le Moyne won each of the top four singles positions in the modified scoring format to claim the victory in the match. At the first spot, Stojanovic was a 4-3, 4-3 victor over Turner. Grundstroem downed Egehus at the second position, 4-2, 4-1. Nunez registered back-to-back scores of 4-2 to defeat Cochlin at the third spot. Piekarek clinched the match by rallying for a 1-4, 4-2, 10-7 win at the fourth position over Ganguly. Marrero earned the win at the fifth spot over Beires, 4-3, 4-1, while Sanchez rallied for a 1-4, 4-3, 10-6 win over Branagan at the sixth position.

Against the Purple Eagles in their afternoon match, the Dolphins earned the point in the doubles competition. Nunez and Grundstroem were 6-3 winners at the first position over Tanner Bedard and Bryce Bodak. Piekarek and Beires claimed a 6-2 victory at the second spot over Vid Maric and Roberto Vaca. Gurustat Makkar and Rohan Srivastava posted a 7-6 win for the Purple Eagles at the third spot over Stojanovic and Branagan.

The Dolphins captured the match by splitting the six spots of the singles competition. At the third spot, Nunez was a 4-2, 4-0 winner over Bodak. Piekarek went to three sets for the second straight match and came out on top, 3-4, 4-1, 10-3, at the fourth position. Branagan topped Makkar at the fifth position with back-to-back scores of 4-2. At the first spot, Bedard was a 4-3, 4-2 winner over Stojanovic, while Maric posted a 4-1, 4-0 win at the second position over Grundstroem. Vazquez won at the sixth spot over Beires, 1-4, 4-1, 10-3.

The Dolphins are next in action on Saturday, January 27 at Binghamton University for their first Northeast Conference match.
